Position Summary: (Barry/Allegan Counties) (Part Time Position)

The Parenting Time Visitation Support Services Program is an in home service providing supervised parenting time for parents, allowing the interaction to take place in a safe environment while promoting healthy relationships. The Parenting Time Visitation Support Services Program provides guidance for parents and children to increase the parent’s confidence and competence in their parenting abilities to successfully nurture their children and provide them with a healthy and safe environment. Families are eligible only within the 15 month period that begins or the date the child entered foster care. Families may have an open MDHHS Children’s Protective Services (Category I, II or III). Families with one or more children in MDHHS supervised out of home placement (including juvenile justice), families open to prevention services with MDHHS local office exception, or MDHHS adoptive families for when a need for post adoption services has been identified by MDHHS to prevent disruption or dissolution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Accurate recording, documentation, submission and follow up.
  • Meet deadline driven time lines.
  • Initiate contact with referred client(s) to explain service, determine client willingness to participate and establish date for home visit or at a location mutually agreed upon by the individual and worker.
  • Receive and accept written referrals from MDHHS via email or fax.
  • Meet separately with the custodial parent/guardian/foster parent and the visiting party to discuss scheduling, child behaviors and services to be provided within 14 calendar days of the referral.
  • Arrange and schedule parenting time as consistent as possible with the primary consideration of the parent's time commitments in order to establish regularly for the children and all parties involved. Submit the schedule for approval by the referring worker. The referring worker shall review, approve and notify CCWM within three (3) business days of receipt and of the submitted parenting time schedule.
  • The Parenting Time Worker must have flexible schedule to provide a number of hours outside of the traditional workday to accommodate the schedules of the individual involved.
  • Provide supervised parenting time for parents with their children, allowing the child to interact with the parents in a safe environment while promoting a healthy relationship.
  • Provide helpful suggestions and information to parents on parenting skills, limit setting, as needed, depending on case dynamics, family needs and visitation goals.
  • Connect parents to community resources as need arises.
  • Transport and transition children or parents to and from each parenting time as requested by the referring worker.
  • Meet weekly face-to-face with each referred family (parent and children in attendance) for a minimum of one hour, unless specified by referring worker.
  • Parenting time shall occur in a family friendly setting such as foster home, agency office, the home of extended family member, or community location such as restaurant, park, library that are mutually agreeable to the referring worker and family.
  • Proved testimony in court at request of referring worker as to what was observed during parenting time.
  • Complete Monthly and Progress reporting.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Required

  • Experience working with multi-problem children and families and overall ability to engage with, and relate to families.
  • Training, education, and experience in the area of human services.
  • Experience with families around issues such as parenting, child care, household management, nutrition and budget.
  • Skills in crisis intervention, assessment of potentially violent situations, and short-term goal setting.
  • Knowledge of family and individual theories and strategies of home-based services, including a strength-based approach.
  • Must have a non-judgmental positive attitude toward families.
  • Must be able to work in partnership with other team members and/or service providers.
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in the agency’s service population.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to families and children 0-18.
  • Must have the ability to forge a mutually-respectful partnership with individuals and families in which they are helped to gain the skills and confidence to address issues and problems.
  • Must have a conviction about an individual’s/family’s capacity to change and grow.
  • Must have an acceptance of individual differences.
  • Reliable transportation, in good working order.
  • Must have valid driver’s license with no restrictions, and insurance as required by law and Agency.
  • Must undergo a Criminal History background check in accordance with the Volunteers for Children Act, amending the National Child Protection Act.
  • Must undergo a Children’s Protective Services check through the Department of Human Services
  • Must submit to Agency approved background checks.
  • Flexibility in work schedule is necessary an availability to families during traditional and non-traditional hours (day, evening & weekend).

The employee, on occasion, may be asked to move or lift items up to 40 pounds in weight.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office based, however, on occasion may require travel to other Agency offices and/or client homes as required by position responsibilities and/or Agency management. This position will be routinely exposed to typical office noise levels and/or exposure to various weather conditions.

Employment Qualifications:

Education:

A High school diploma, GED, or Bachelor’s Degree in social work, sociology, psychology, family ecology, consumer/community services, family studies, family and/or child development, guidance/school counseling, counseling psychology or a related area is preferred.

Experience:

Prior experience working with families around issues such as parenting, child care household management, nutrition and budgeting. Knowledge of community resources and ability to handle crisis is preferred.

Valid driver's license with no restrictions

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
