Catawba Valley Community College is Hiring a Furniture instructor Near Taylorsville, NC

Description

Provides classroom instruction to prison inmates through lecture, computer simulations, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, the use of audio-visuals, responding to questions, and testing;

and to perform related duties as required.

Receives general supervision from Program Director and / or College Educational Liaison for the prison. Supervises classroom assistants as assigned.

Examples of Duties

Attend instructor orientation provided by the correctional institution prior to entering classroom.

Provide classroom / laboratory instruction to inmates of correctional institution.

Prepare for each learning experience; prepare, maintain, and update lesson plan; develop and prepare methods to evaluate student performance;

prepare laboratory to provide demonstrations and hands-on experience as appropriate; order supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons as appropriate.

Meet classes at scheduled times.

Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; proctor tests; grade and record individual scores.

Evaluate student performance in laboratory when applicable.

Assist with registration of students.

Attend campus meetings / in-service training activities for college faculty and staff when appropriate.

Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance daily and long range educational plans for each student and submit reports according to policy.

Assist with and carry out, as required, the policies and procedures related to the college and the correctional institution.

Keep lines of communication open with both the college and the correctional institution.

Participate, as appropriate, on college committees, prison activities and advisory committees.

Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances including blood borne pathogens; train students in the safe handling of hazardous substances or equipment, where applicable.

Maintain classroom / laboratory / specialized facilities to include overall cleanliness and conformance to OSHA, where applicable.

Maintain required office hours according to established policies.

Participates in a recognition activity for inmates completing a course / program.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge in areas of instructional expertise.

Compliance with the rules and guidelines set forth by the department of corrections while in the prison setting is required.

Any failure to comply to these rules and guidelines will result in disciplinary action and possible loss of position with both the college and the correctional institution.

Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies in assigned classroom / laboratory.

Recommend purchases of equipment and supplies when appropriate.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of :

Applicant must have knowledge in :

  • All aspects of woodworking & machines to include table saw, overhead routers, inverted routers, bandsaws, various boring machines, planer, moulder, jointer, ripsaw, CNC machining, finishing, HVLP system, ect.
  • Hand tools and building techniques of furniture and cabinet construction from raw material to finished product.

Applicant must be able to read CAD drawings & blueprints.

Applicant must be able to produce cut sheets for raw material.

Classroom / laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.

Correct procedures of record keeping. Effective techniques of test development.

Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations of assigned location.

Ability to : :

Participate in instructional programs suited to the correctional institution's setting.

Provide classroom / laboratory instruction to inmates.

Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities. Interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws and regulations of both the college and correctional institution.

Maintain effective interaction and communication with the student inmates.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Effectively handle the work environment according to all rules and regulations of the correctional institution.

Use personal computers and appropriate software while completing college and prison tasks.

Handle confidential information and sensitive materials with discretion. Use effective written and oral communication skills, time management and organizational skills.

Work effectively with prison officials and college personnel to address issues and concerns to resolve conflicts.

Experience

Minimum of 1-3 years appropriate teaching experience in the particular field of expertise in an instructional setting preferred.

Training

Sacs requirements for each vocational and correctional program must be met.

License Or Certificate

Appropriate licenses / certifications are preferred for areas in which instruction will be provided.
