Job Description
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Working under general supervision, the Mechanical, Construction, and Theatre Safety Specialist supports and facilitates the research, facilities, construction, and performing arts environment while protecting the health and safety of its personnel and the community.
This position develops and implements safety protocols, standard operating procedures and policies as needed to meet this goal.
This position provides operational safety training and shop coordination for the Physical Plant machine shops, performing arts centers, and student clubs on campus.
This position will keep up with trends in machining materials and theatre safety.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develop and provide general shop safety training for all staff and student managers of fabrication facilities including student groups and theatre groups.
Assure programs are followed through with periodic inspections. Ensure groups are aware of requirements and external contractors required to maintain their machines and inspect their equipment.
Approve and inspect the installation of all new equipment and ensure proper guarding and safety equipment is installed . (25%)
Conduct weekly visits of the construction and renovations site across campus. Inspect and evaluate safety and compliance-related incidents to ensure all federal and state regulations are being strictly followed.
Follow up and track corrections to deficiencies. Perform root cause and incident investigation techniques when required, including collection of safety and health standard incident reporting forms and documentation.
Ensure all of Case Western Reserve University's policies and procedures are being followed to secure a successful project. (22%)
Ensure that all cranes on campus are in safe operating order and meet regulatory requirements. (6%)
This ensures that students are educated about safety from the start of their academic journey. (6%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintain all administrative tasks related to specific safety documentation / filing systems, etc. including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record keeping, management reports, etc.
Provide weekly report of activities on all construction job sites including issues found, contractors involved, and resolution.
This report will be provided to the assistant director of facilities safety, the senior director of facilities safety, the relevant project managers, and the directors of facilities and planning design construction. (3%)
Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)
CONTACTS
Department : Frequent contact with assistant directors, and other staff to maintain workflow.
University : Moderate contact with faculty and staff regarding training, inspections, education, training and permitting.
External : Infrequent contact with contractors and vendors regarding training and inspections.
Students : Occasional contact with students to provide training and during laboratory and other safety inspections.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
None.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience : 3 to 7 years of experience
Education / Licensing : Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety or related field required. OHSA 30 HR. Construction card preferred.
HAZWOPER (24 hr), EPA RCRA, DOT / IATA certification preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS
WORKING CONDITIONS
In addition to a typical office environment, this position will frequently work in hazardous conditions requiring the use of personnel protective equipment and may be exposed to chemical, biological and radiological hazards and 24-hour emergency contact.
Minimal travel required.
