POSITION DESCRIPTION
Working under general supervision, the Mechanical, Construction, and Theatre Safety Specialist supports and facilitates the research, facilities, construction, and performing arts environment while protecting the health and safety of its personnel and the community. Responsibilities include university compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations. This position works with the assistant directors of environmental health and safety as well as principal investigators and students to update or implement new university policy as needed to ensure the university is at, or exceeding, industry best management practices. This position develops and implements safety protocols, standard operating procedures and policies as needed to meet this goal. This position provides operational safety training and shop coordination for the Physical Plant machine shops, performing arts centers, and student clubs on campus. This position will keep up with trends in machining materials and theatre safety.

CONTACTS
Department: Frequent contact with assistant directors, and other staff to maintain workflow.
University: Moderate contact with faculty and staff regarding training, inspections, education, training and permitting.
External: Infrequent contact with contractors and vendors regarding training and inspections.
Students: Occasional contact with students to provide training and during laboratory and other safety inspections.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
None.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 3 to 7 years of experience
Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety or related field required. OHSA 30 HR. Construction card preferred. HAZWOPER (24 hr), EPA RCRA, DOT/IATA certification preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS
In addition to a typical office environment, this position will frequently work in hazardous conditions requiring the use of personnel protective equipment and may be exposed to chemical, biological and radiological hazards and 24-hour emergency contact. Minimal travel required.
