Casa of Hobart is Hiring a Bus Driver Near Merrillville, IN

I. Driver Authorization

A. Candidates who wish to drive for the Facility must meet the following requirements:

i. Be at least 21 years of age;

ii. Present a current, valid driver’s license;

iii. If the Facility vehicle being operated is a commercial motor vehicle (this includes certain trucks or vehicles capable of transporting 15 or more passengers including the driver), the candidate is required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.

B. Each candidate must complete the Motor Vehicle Record (“MVR”)

Questionnaire, and MVR Release Consent Form, and other background check forms to initiate the background check and motor vehicle record request.

C. The Facility will conduct a background check that includes a review of the candidate’s MVR.

D. A candidate will be disqualified if his or her MVR contains the following violations:

i. One Type A violation within the past 7 years. Type A

violations include:

1. driving while intoxicated or under the influence of any illegal substance;

2. hit and run (failure to stop when involved in an accident);

3. vehicular homicide;

4. use of a vehicle in the commission of a felony.

ii. Two Type B violations within the past 7 years. Type B violations include:

1. eluding a police officer;

2. drag racing.

iii. Three Type C violations within the past 3 years. Type C

violations include:

1. all moving violations;

2. speeding;

3. improper lane change;

4. failure to yield;

5. running a stop light or stop sign;

6. reckless driving

iv. One Type B violation within the past 7 years and two Type C violations within the past 3 years.

E. Drivers must annually submit to the Facility a new MVR consent form for review to verify continued eligibility for driving privileges and responsibilities.

F. Drivers are required to immediately report any type of driving violation that occurs during their employment, whether during work hours or personal time.

G. A copy of the driver’s license, as well as all completed forms, shall be maintained in the employee’s personnel file.

II. Driver Education and Training

Drivers must complete all the required trainings listed below upon authorization and annually thereafter. All required documents must be signed and submitted and will be maintained in the employee’s personnel file.

A. Vehicle Driver Safety Training

B. Resident Securement Training

C. Safety Responsibilities Acknowledgement Form

D. Driver Basic Skills Validation

III. Driver Responsibilities

A. Drivers must be “job-ready” at all times during their employment hours at the Facility. Job-ready means that they are physically and mentally able to do their jobs.

B. Drivers may not use intoxicants, drugs, or medications that could impair their ability to drive.

C. Drivers are encouraged to plan mini breaks every 2 hours during long periods of driving and to allow for no more than 10 hours of driving per day in good driving conditions.

D. Drivers must wear, and require all passengers to wear, seat belts at all times in Facility vehicles.

E. Only the trained driver may secure residents in the vehicle. The driver may not delegate this responsibility to any other person, unless that person is also trained in securing residents in vehicles.

F. Use the Resident Securement Checklist to ensure the residents are properly secured in the vehicle.

G. Smoking is never permitted in Facility vehicles.

H. Drivers must obey all traffic signs and signals.

I. Drivers may not talk on, text, or use mobile phones at all while driving a Facility vehicle. If a call must be placed, the driver shall pull off the road to place the call. Drivers may only answer incoming calls if they are using a hands-free device.

J. Drivers are responsible for the care of vehicles assigned to them and may be held liable for improper care and abuse of the vehicle.

IV. Vehicle Operations and Maintenance

A. A copy of this Vehicle Safety Policy, with all attachments, and the Securement Checklist shall be maintained in the vehicle.

B. All vehicle logs shall be completed and maintained in the vehicle.

i. A Daily Vehicle Pre-trip Checklist shall be reviewed and completed by the driver prior to each trip;

ii. A Weekly Vehicle Inspection Form (See CCG00315g) shall be completed weekly by the river and/or maintenance director as designated.

C. Issues identified by either the Daily Vehicle Pre-Trip Checklist or the Weekly Vehicle Inspection Form must be reported to the Administrator before making a trip in the vehicle. The Administrator will determine if the vehicle is fit to drive.

D. Vehicle maintenance and repairs, as well as vehicle inspections, shall be performed according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. Copies of the maintenance schedule and maintenance and repair records shall be maintained in the vehicle and in Facility

files.
