Carnegie Mellon University is Hiring a Research Engineer - School of Computer Science - HCII Near Pittsburgh, PA

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities. The CMU SPUD lab is hiring a Research Engineer to join the efforts of the privacy through design initiative: we explore the design space of a tool for AI practitioners, who design and build consumer-facing AI products, to scaffold the critical reflection around privacy risks entailed by the requirement or the capability of AI they intend to build. The Research Engineer will build upon a taxonomy on privacy in AI that the research team has previously established, and use a large language model (LLM) to create tools that help practitioners contextualize each type of privacy risks to their AI product ideas. The goal is to help practitioners to quickly identify relevant privacy risks and their potential intensity that pertain to their AI product ideas. The system will also allow users to generate contextualized privacy feedback, with the goal to provide practitioners more visualized risks to discuss and perform critical product reflection. You will help front and backend development of the web-based tool itself. Core Responsibilities: Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect, and record results or observations. Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records. Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination, or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models. Inclusion and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of diverse audiences. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Experience in web development. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web development frameworks. Experience with database management and back-end programming (Javascript and/or Python). Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered. Requirements: Successful background check Joining the CMU team opens the door to an array of exceptional benefits available to eligible employees.
