Carnegie Institution is Hiring a Library Technicial Specialist Near Washington, DC

Department: EPL – Earth and Planets Laboratory
Salary: $60,000-$68,000
Location: Washington, DC

Position Summary:

The Library Technical Specialist performs tasks essential to the orderly operation of Carnegie Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory library and archives, and supports large library projects, including an upcoming stack weeding and reorganization project, and library catalog migration. In this role the Library Technical Specialist supports a vibrant research community of scientists, postdocs, and administrative staff. This position reports to the EPL Librarian.

Essential Duties

  • Interlibrary loan and document delivery, using OCLC WorldShare
  • Accessioning new acquisitions
  • Serials check-in and claiming
  • Circulation control and stack management
  • Creating metadata and controlled vocabularies according to established standards
  • Curating departmental publications repository
  • Digitizing photographs and documents
  • Boxing and labeling archival records
  • Updating collection management databases in Microsoft Access and Excel
  • Performing basic library/archival preservation measures
  • Preparing library statistics reports
  • Maintaining library equipment in good working order and assisting personnel in using it
  • Ordering library and archival supplies
  • Answering routine inquiries and referring users to the Librarian for in-depth assistance
  • Scheduling use of the Collaboration Center and Reading Room
  • Contributing to the preparation of library exhibits, websites, and social media posts
  • Assist in major weeding and reorganization of the library areas
  • Assisting the Librarian with other relevant duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; at least one year of relevant technical experience in a library, archives, or information center

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library/information science, museum or archive studies, electronic records management, digital curation or related field.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong customer-service orientation
  • Ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies and procedures
  • Ability to learn new material independently
  • Ability to prioritize tasks while meeting concurrent deadlines

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk or sit; use hands to handle or operate equipment; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to pack, lift and move boxes weighing up to 30 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to climb a 6-step ladder to reach high shelves.
