Job Summary

Plans, organizes, schedules, coordinates, and directs comprehensive activity programs and events designed to enhance the mind, body and soul of each of our senior residents. This is to be done by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate staff or other Associates.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.

  • Recognize the psychosocial needs of the elderly.
  • Know and understand dementia and how residents may be affected by the disease progression and try to anticipate their needs.
  • Practice and use Positive Approach to Care to enhance life and relationships of those living with brain change.
  • Ensure programs are created to engage residents at all levels of the dementia disease progression by incorporating Gems into all activities and adapt the activity to each Gem state.
  • Studies and analyzes seniors’ recreational needs and resources.
  • Conducts research and develops short- and long-range goals and objectives.
  • Continuously seeks out new activities, events, and excursions.
  • Know and understand the Community residents’ likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests.
  • Try to maximize individual participation in events, while still respecting the resident’s right to privacy.
  • Facilitate training and implementation of our signature programs.
  • Facilitate creation of monthly newsletters.
  • Attend monthly theme calls to facilitate monthly theme ideas.
  • Facilitate quarterly candlelight dinners.
  • Support memory care dining programs and its signature programming elements.
  • Research and implement new programs and material to satisfy residents mind, body, and soul.
  • Facilitate major events like the Alzheimer’s Walks and community BBQ’s
  • Attend quarterly activity manager meetings.
  • Co-facilitate activities in memory care to train staff and enhance their skills.
  • Support the completion of the life stories of all new residents.
  • Visit residents in their apartments as much as possible
  • Interprets programs and their philosophy to individuals and groups through personal participation and staff assignments.
  • Schedules maintenance and use of Activity Rooms, and all the equipment necessary for the department’s use.
  • Assists Sales in maintaining a continuous in-house and Community marketing effort as well as successful rental sales. This can be done by preparing a stimulating and interesting activity program represented by an attractive, monthly activity newsletter/ calendar.
  • Decorate all common areas of the Community appropriately and adequately in advance of all monthly holidays to efficiently promote anticipation, enthusiasm, and participation of the Residents.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervises Activity Assistant, and any volunteers in the Activity Department.
  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • May perform daily payroll edits. Adjust payroll records as appropriate. Perform end of period review.
  • Observe work environment for potential injury hazards and take appropriate preventative safety precautions. Actively participate in prevention, reporting, and management of Workers’ Comp. Claims.
  • Able to read and write reports, business correspondence, memos and staff performance evaluations.
  • May manage staff schedules.

  • Meet all training requirements within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Follow standard precautions and practice all precautionary measures related to contagious disease and infections.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for your job.
  • Work Environment

  • Requires patience in working with Senior Residents in the range of 60-100 plus years of age.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • At times, may be required to work outdoors.
  • May include exposure to dogs, cats or other pets.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand or kneel.
  • The employee may be asked to occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Communication Skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out written or oral instructions.
  • Education and Experience
  • Experience working with seniors living with Dementia.
  • Experience conducting individual and group activities.
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED), or equivalent experience.
  • According to Title 22 requirements, employee must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Certificates, License, Registration
  • Current First Aid Certification (obtained through community)
  • DOJ and FBI fingerprint clearance must be completed prior to working in community (obtained through community)
  • Health screening and negative TB test, must be less than six (6) months old. (obtained through community)
