This position is great for anyone looking to make a difference this summer. A Resident Camp Counselor aims to identify and meet camper needs at a resident summer camp through the Carlisle Family YMCA. Carlisle Family YMCA Camp Thompson Resident camp has sessions running intermittently from the first week of June to the first week of August. ROOM\BOARD, and FOOD Provided.

Expectations are to supervise 8 (or less) campers ranging from ages 7- 14 years old and one Counselor in Training for 4 sessions of Resident Camp and 1 session of Day Camp on site. Resident sessions are one week, Sunday afternoons to Friday evenings. Counselors are expected to plan, organize, and lead cabin activities which build an individual camper’s sense of self-esteem while developing a sense of inclusion within the cabin group.

Qualifications/Qualities:

• At least 17 years of age
• Have previous leadership experience
• Desire and proven ability to work with children and willing to develop skills in outdoor living
• Ability to assist in teaching programs and activities
• Good character, integrity and adaptability
• Enthusiastic and patient with good self-control
• Certified in First Aid and CPR (available upon hire)

What you'll Do:

• Actively participate in staff trainings and meetings
• Set a good example for campers and others; including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners
• Follow camp rules and regulations pertaining to smoking, alcohol and drugs
• Encourage respect for each other, personal property, camp equipment, and nature
• Learn the likes/dislikes of campers
• Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the group
• Help each participant meet the goals established by Camp Thompson for camper development
• Write a letter to each camper’s parents explaining the camper’s activities, challenges, and successes of the week. These letters are to be turned into the Camp Director for review at the end of the week to be sent out to camper's families
• Know the safety aspects of camp and trail life which include:

a. Being responsible for the cabin’s general health and safety
b. Inspecting first-aid kits before leaving camp
c. Being familiar with geographic areas around camp and on the trail and all potential dangers
d. Inspecting all equipment before it is used
e. Caring properly for all programming and camping equipment

• Be familiar with your campers medical history forms
• Plan and lead trips and activities with campers (optional)

Pay is a full time seasonal salary; starting at 425 and can increase depending on certifications, years of experience, degree, etc. Training is expected to be attended, and is paid for. Additional to pay, a YMCA employment includes a CPR certification (if not already certified), YMCA membership, and opportunity for lifeguard certification.
