Job Description

Envisioneering, Inc. is seeking a part-time Senior Technical Writer to support our current work at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in the DC area. This is a hybrid position approximately 80% telework / 20% on-site.

SUMMARY Description:

• Prepare manuscripts developed by others for publication by making sure the material conveys what it was intended to say, is arranged logically, presents the facts to support the conclusions drawn, is in accordance with agency policy and required format, when necessary, and is written clearly and interestingly for the intended audience.
• Combine the writings of multiple authors and/or contractors, if applicable, into single coherent works.
• Advise and assist authors during the writing stage.
• Verify the information using their own knowledge supplemented by research and consultation with other subject experts.
• Examine the organization, length, and tone of the material.
• Edit the text for clarity and accuracy.
• Consult on design and graphics and improve if necessary; may use Corporate Communications Office visual information specialists to assist, if necessary.
• Use substantial technical knowledge to understand the technical material, rewrite to organize, balance, and complete deficient manuscripts to meet publishing objectives.
• Consider policy regulations and formatting and apply a consistent set of style, grammar, and punctuation practices to manuscripts.
• Discuss substantial/substantive changes with the authors.
• Read the draft manuscript or other material, noting all inconsistencies and errors in grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and style.
• Edit the material so that it explains technical information in such a way as to make it clear without sacrificing thoroughness and accuracy.
• Edit either on hard copy or digitally within the file so that the markings or track changes are easy to understand.

Job Requirements

Minimum Skills/ Qualifications: 

• 10 years relevant work experience.
• Current DoD SECRET clearance.
• Demonstrated record of publication of research findings, both in unclassified and classified literature/journals/proceedings.
• Demonstrated practical experience in leading NRL research programs.
• Experience as technical editor is highly desired.

Education:

• Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or other related technical degree.
