Located in Wilmington, NC, Cape Fear Academy is southeastern North Carolina’s premier PK3-12 independent school. Summer Camp Assistants

Scope of Role: Under the supervision of the Camp Director and the Director of Auxiliary Programs, the Summer Camp Assistant is responsible for leading and building relationships with the Camp participants of Cape Fear Academy. Assistants are responsible for managing students within the stated mission, goals, policies and standards established by Cape Fear Academy.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and builds relationships with a group of students grades PK - 8
  • Executes program activities, planned by the Camp Director that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with Cape Fear Academy. 
  • Maintain an atmosphere that is fun, safe, friendly and challenging. 
  • Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children in the program.
  • Models and facilitates relationship-building skills in all interactions and maintains positive relationships with students, parents, school staff and other Cape Fear Academy staff. 
  • Adheres to Cape Fear Academy’s policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency management.
  • Assists in set up and clean up of Camp program areas.
  • Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of and left in good, clean condition daily. 
  • Attends staff meetings and training. 
  • Communicate to parents and staff to keep them informed of child’s experience and behavior in Camp.
  • Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within the area of responsibility. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Schedule (Days): Monday through Friday, excluding the week of Independence Day

Calendar: Weekly June 3 to July 26, excluding July 1-5.

Job Schedule (Time): Either 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM or 12:30 PM - 4:30PM (or both).

Requirements

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior camp staff experience or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must be 16 years old (by June 15th). 
  • Preferably 18 years of age.
  • Ability and experience in supervising children. 
  • Desire and ability to work in a camp setting.
  • Must be adaptable, possess high integrity and willing to serve as a good role model.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Positive attitudes and ability to work as a cohesive team-member required.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games, etc. 
  • Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • CPR certification will be required. Training provided.

Experience: Background in childhood education or daycare provision preferred. Experience working with children from ages PK-8 required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Ability to sit, walk or stand for the majority of a normal workday.
  • Pull/push/carry up to 25 lbs. of equipment.
  • Must have sufficient close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to hear sufficiently in order to communicate with others.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and loudly enough to be understood.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with moderate noise level.
