Our team advances manufacturing processes and materials to support the most challenging missions in the galaxy: re-entry from space, interplanetary travel, hypersonic weapons, and more. Canopy’s product lines are centered around technical ceramic components needed to withstand heat, corrosive environments, and the harshness of space.

Position Overview The Director of Federal Capture will join Canopy to accelerate our traction in securing major US government contracts. Since October 2022, Canopy has been awarded over $4.5M worth of R&D contracts across NASA, USAF, and MDA. You’ll take us to the next level of engaging the US government, professionalizing how we manage relationships to how we track market signals and develop solutions. This position will report directly to Canopy’s Chief Commercial Officer and play an instrumental role in building transformative solutions for public sector missions. 

You’re not afraid to challenge assumptions around government contracting or propose new ways of doing business – in 2024, the government is more willing than ever to take creative approaches to contracting, scoping, and execution. You’re willing to roll up your sleeves and do what it takes to win; our small team prides itself on being scrappy.

Responsibilities

  • Understand our government partners’ missions better than they do 
  • Develop winning proposals for Canopy’s applied innovations and manufacturing capabilities 
  • Lead interactions with government personnel and manage our team’s strategy company-wide 
  • Communicate as a technical expert and empathetic problem solver 
  • Grow a network of government stakeholders that’s unparalleled in the small business community 
  • Lead Canopy’s engagements with technical consortia and potential technical partners 
  • Understand Canopy’s technical capabilities down to the fundamental physics enablers 
  • Be an expert in dynamics relevant to Canopy’s business – New Space markets, national security spending, venture capital investment, federal R&D themes, manufacturing and materials development, and others 
  • Support other business development, strategy, and operations activities – we’re a startup! 

 

Requirements – should meet most of these 

  • A sincere excitement for the technologies Canopy develops and the missions of our customers 
  • Strong track record of large-dollar federal award wins where you were the primary proposal writer 
  • Entrepreneurial experience and attitude – you make things happen 
  • Expert communication skills – able to concisely communicate ambiguously-defined market information and technical capabilities equally-well 
  • Successful track record of sourcing and closing complex B2B / B2G deals 
  • Fluency in MS Office suite, Canva/Adobe, CRM software, and other digital software products 
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project milestones or operational needs - we’re a small team that works fast; everyone is expected to wear multiple hats 

Nice to have’s (but not required) - you should still apply even if you don’t have all of these  

  • Post-secondary degree(s) in Engineering or Science 
  • An existing network of US government technical stakeholders 
  • Experience leading technical project teams 
  • Experience working in a manufacturing-based organization 
  • Active US security clearance

Actual level and base salary determined on a case-by-case basis and could vary depending on education, job-related knowledge and skills, fit with the company, and experience.

Other Requirements Travel required up to 50% of the time 

This position requires the ability to obtain a government security clearance in the future; you must be a US Citizen for consideration. There is no requirement to be holding an active security clearance prior to employment.
