At Canfor, safety is our top priority. This role will play a pivotal part in working alongside regional safety managers, mill health & safety advisors, mill management, and all employees to implement and sustain safety initiatives that align with our overarching safety strategy. By emphasizing our core value of "Safety Comes First" and fostering a collaborative approach, we aim to create incident-free workplaces throughout Canfor's operations in the southern United States.

The life of the Senior Manager, Safety includes:

  • Maintaining the highest standards with respect to safety at all times, leading by example
  • Leading the ongoing improvement and standardization of the Occupational Health and Safety Program and related Safety Management Systems, consistent with the various laws, codes, and regulations that apply across the seven states we operate in
  • Demonstrating the ability to work effectively and consult at all levels of the organization and to collaborate with managers, staff, and hourly employees in order to achieve excellence in health and safety
  • Providing technical health and safety advice to all levels of the organization using a hands-on and realistic approach that demonstrates an understanding of the safety risks inherent in the sawmilling industry
  • Creating training and policies on a variety of issues that include but are not limited to machine guarding, lockout, hot work, confined space, fall protection, PPE, cranes and lifting devices, forklifts, industrial hygiene, noise, loss management, contractor management, loss prevention, combustible dust, first aid, and emergency response.
  • Collaborate with management teams on delivering safety training for all employees

For this role, come equipped with:

  • Degree in Business, Forestry, or an Industrial-related field
  • 10 years of leadership experience in creating and executing safety programs for a mid to large-size manufacturing organization
  • Incident investigation skills and training as well as experience with emergency management processes, requirements, and structure including auditing knowledge
  • Familiarity with investigating on-site critical safety incidents and working with OSHA on remediation activities
  • Subject matter expert in OSHA regulations and safety best practices
  • Demonstrated experience championing Industrial Loss Prevention programs
  • The ability to travel across the US South

Ideally, you also hold a Professional Safety Designation (such as CRSP, CSP, or CMIOSH), have hands-on experience in manufacturing operations, specifically within sawmilling, possess familiarity with the Enablon system, and demonstrate a track record of championing Industrial Loss Prevention programs.

If you're a dedicated safety advocate with a knack for fostering a culture of safety through innovative approaches, and you grasp the unique challenges of working in a sawmilling setting, click that “apply” button today!

Don’t check off every single bullet point? Studies show that people are reluctant to apply for positions they aren’t 100% qualified for. At Canfor, our focus is finding the right fit for our organization, not a criteria checklist. We encourage applications from individuals whose backgrounds may not perfectly align.

At Canfor, diversity means understanding, recognizing, and valuing the differences that make each person unique. We see inclusion and diversity as essential to our productivity, creativity, innovation, and competitive advantage. Therefore, we strive for a fair and equitable recruitment process where hiring decisions are based on each applicant's qualifications and experience.

We thank all candidates for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Hiring for this position is ongoing and will be filled as required.
