Job description

Contract Support Group Facilitator

REPORTS TO: Clinical Program Director

STATUS: Contract Position - Hourly – TBD Avondale Location

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Contract Support Group Facilitator is a licensed mental health professional responsible for the facilitation of groups for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers in accordance with Cancer Support Community Arizona (CSCAZ) guidelines. Group Facilitators guide members to connect with one another as they discover ways to reduce isolation, regain a sense of control, and find hope. Group Facilitators are specifically trained in the CSCAZ philosophy and support group methodology and utilize those specific skills in group facilitation at CSCAZ. Facilitators continue to cultivate CSCAZ group facilitation skills through participation in regular clinical supervision meetings. Facilitators may also be engaged to conduct pre-group interviews, participant follow-ups, and other program elements as well as representing the CSCAZ mission, core concepts, and philosophy to the general public.

Duties and Responsibilities

I. Support Group Facilitation and Management

  • Facilitate support groups in which members share their cancer-related experiences while gaining knowledge and support from peers in regularly scheduled meetings by utilizing the CSCAZ support group model.
  • Serve as an expert in group facilitation and the psychosocial aspects of cancer across the continuum (diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life) but not as an expert in cancer or cancer treatment.
  • Conduct pre-group interviews when required by the Senior Program Director to ensure the participant’s needs are conducive to a group milieu.
  • Provide telephone, mail, and/or email follow-up with group members as needed and per CSCAZ protocol.
  • Maintain paperwork specific to group management (rosters, attendance, pre-group interview forms, etc.)
  • Submit all required attendance sheets, reports, and time sheets in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide back-up coverage for other support groups as needed and if time allows.

II. General Program Administration and Direct Service

  • May be engaged to serve as a CSC “host” for educational workshops and other special programs. Expectations include, but are not limited to, introducing speakers/workshop leaders, providing introductory remarks that include a brief overview of CSCAZ, participating in the program, occasional facilitation with presenter, fielding questions and answers, providing evaluations and closure, and providing feedback to the Senior Program Director on the process and content of the workshop.
  • Communicate effectively with group participants, interns, staff, and stakeholders to mitigate barriers to progress and ensure effective professional collaboration.
  • Exercise appropriate and effective clinical boundaries that align with ethical, legal, and professional standards for conducting psychosocial support services in-person, via telehealth, and via hybrid modalities.
  • Provide other program support, including individual, couple and/or family resources as needed.
  • Voluntarily attend occasional CSCAZ social events and fundraising activities when schedule permits as an in-kind activity to celebrate and further the CSCAZ mission.
  • Work to build community among all members, staff, and others.

III. Supervision and Professional Development

  • Complete approximately 10 hours of training experience at CSCAZ under the direction of the Senior Program Director. Training will include group observation, attendance at supervision meetings, independent readings, and attendance of other programs.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision meetings under the direction of the Senior Program Director.
  • Provide annual documentation of current licensure and maintain malpractice insurance.
  • Voluntarily participate in ongoing continuing education opportunities related to psychosocial oncology to comply with licensure requirements.
  • Serve as an “ambassador” to spread awareness about CSCAZ across the community at large.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed Mental Health Professional - including Licensed Counselor (LPC, LAC), Licensed Social Worker (LCSW, LMSW), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LAMFT, LMFT) or Clinical Psychologist (PhD, PsyD) in the State of Arizona.
  • Strong clinical skills, including individual counseling and support group experience, and ability to work with issues surrounding chronic and life-threatening illness.
  • One to three years’ experience in oncology and/or support group facilitation is highly desired.
  • Willingness to master and implement CSCAZ psychosocial support methods, participate in ongoing clinical supervision, and the overall experience of a support community.
  • Documentation of clinical licensure and malpractice insurance.
  • Ability to administer CSCAZ policies and procedures while maintaining a warm, professional, personal, informative, and effective implementation of programming.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work a varied and flexible schedule, including possible evenings and Saturdays and at satellite locations around Maricopa County.
  • Commitment to working as a team member in a supportive community.
