Research Nurse – START Midwest

Summary

Nurse will be assigned multiple protocols at any time for which they will oversee aspects of protocols with planning and coordinating patient participation in the trial. Is responsible for implementation as well as completion of protocol specific requirements. Provide accurate, up to date information to all team members involved with any aspect of carrying out protocol specific requirements. Will assist in the maintenance of all study related Case Report Forms, whether paper or electronic as well as know status of completion. Will assist with regulatory requirements if needed as assigned. Will understand the ethical issues involved in human subjects research, adhering to the Federal Regulations governing research.

Job Requirements

Education: Licensed RN in the State of Michigan. Successful completion of competency based orientation program and chemotherapy certificate. CPR certification or acquisition within 90 days of employment.

Experience: Minimum of 1-year medical/surgical (preferred oncology).

Other: Time management and organizational skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of a variety of health care equipment. Ability to make quality, independent decisions. Ability to instruct and direct the work of others. 80% of time spend standing and/or walking. Ability to lift up to a 60 pound weight load. Very frequent lifting and bending, pushing and/or pulling loads. Able to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.

Essential Functions

Nurse will provide patient care including telephone triage assessments of patients on trial when necessary. Provide patient education regarding participation in a clinical trial, chemotherapy/biotherapy/investigational agent administration and potential side effects. Administer study agent per study protocol specifications. Follow basic job description specifications of CHC infusion RN.

Communicates on a regular basis with Study Sponsor’s, CRO’s, staff, etc. regarding questions, concerns, as well as status of the protocol. Communicate with Investigators and CRA (if assigned) with regular communication with each CRA involved with assigned protocols.

Will monitor the overall day-to-day conduct of assigned studies in accordance with the specified protocol requirements, Standard Operating Procedures, and Good Clinical Practice to ensure integrity regarding all aspects of the study.

Complete and reviews forms created or revised for assigned trials to assure protocol compliance, patient data entry or case report forms. Prepares and manages source documents according to standard operating procedures. Performs/resolves queries. Work with Principal Investigator to complete and submit Serious Adverse Event repots.

Maintains files using standardized study document labeling and filing procedures. Recognizes deviations to protocol and works with Investigator or management to correct in order to prevent future deviations. Participates in study close out related activities in conjunction with CRA (if assigned).

Works with Investigator to facilitate informed consent process ensuring that all eligibility is met. Facilitate consent process with patient.

Performs or assists in the screening process for potential patients.

Follows all specifications as written in the Treatment Nurse START Midwest job description.

Function as a team member by expanding his/her responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.

Communicates and interacts with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHCWM staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients/family members and demonstrates sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age specific needs and confidentiality.

This employee has access to medical records daily. The parts of the medical record s/he needs to references to perform his/her job are as follows: Lab Information System, Pharmacy Information System, Entire Chart/Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Electronic Billing System (EBS).

Works closely with physicians and ancillary personnel in caring for and treating oncology/hematology patients. Exposure to a variety of attitudes, personalities, and health related reactions of patients, families and visitors. Possible exposure to a variety of contagious diseases and/or hazardous materials.
