Registered Nurse
General Summary:
Provides quality cancer care by assessing and monitoring patients, formulating a nursing diagnosis and prioritizing problems. Engages the patient in mutual goal setting and developing a plan of care in collaboration with the physician and other members of the health care team.
Job Requirements:
Education: Licensed RN in the State of Michigan. Successful completion of competency based orientation program and chemotherapy certificate. ONS Chemo & Biotherapy Provider Card and CPR certification or acquisition within 90 days of employment.
Experience: Minimum of 1-year medical/surgical (preferably oncology).
Other: Time management and organizational skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of a variety of health care equipment. Ability to make quality, independent decisions. Ability to instruct and direct the work of others. 80% of time spend standing and/or walking. Ability to lift up to a 60 pound weight load. Very frequent lifting and bending, pushing and/or pulling loads. Able to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Education/Experience: BSN, OCN, >1 year of oncology experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
  • Assesses and monitors the overall needs of patients and significant others.
  • Develops and maintains an individualized plan of care with the patient and significant others.
  • Initiates follow-up care in community and home.
  • Gives chemotherapy according to ONS and OSHA guidelines.
  • Provides research based nursing care in cooperation with physicians, research team and community and national research standards.
  • Evaluates patients and significant others needs for education and develops and implements appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Documents nursing care and teaching consistent with documentation guidelines.
  • Maintains communication with other health team members to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services. Acts as patient/significant others advocate.
  • Assumes a leadership role and delegates appropriately to support staff to facilitate safe, efficient and quality patient care.
  • Documents patient chargeable services and items used.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in oncology by reading, attending conferences, seminars, etc.
Function as a team member by expanding his/her responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.
Communicates and interacts with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHCWM staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients/family members and demonstrates sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age specific needs and confidentiality.
This employee has access to medical records daily. The parts of the medical record s/he needs to reference to perform his/her job are as follows: Face Sheet Section, Physician Correspondence, Radiology, Pathology, Labs, Hospitalization, History and Physical, Home Health (Encounter Forms), Chemotherapy Flow Sheet (Treatment Section), Dictation, Lab Information System, Pharmacy Information System, Entire Chart/Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Work Environment:
Very fast-paced and ever changing healthcare environment. Demanding regarding deadlines and time frames. Very detailed and challenging work. Constant demand for updating knowledge. Works closely with physicians and ancillary personnel in caring for and treating oncology/hematology patients. Exposure to a variety of attitudes, personalities, and health related reactions of patients, families and visitors. Possible exposure to a variety of contagious diseases and/or hazardous materials. The physical activities of this position include: Carrying and Lifting - 1lbs -10lbs; 34% to 66% of the time. Hand movement – Simple grasping, gross grasping, and fine manipulation, e.g. IV Pumps (feeding tubing/pushing buttons). Constantly (67-100%) carrying, standing, walking and repetitive hand/wrist motion. Frequently (34-66%) sitting, reaching above shoulder, and forearm rotation. Occasionally ( 1-33%) twisting/turning, stooping/bending, pushing/pulling and/or squatting.
