Pharmacy Technician
General Summary:
Dispense prescription drugs to patients, and assist in the preparation and charging of medications and supplies under the supervision of the pharmacist in charge. Provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Processes, enters and interprets physician orders, and mixes complex sterile (including cytotoxic) products, using aseptic technique. Follow departmental procedures with regard to inventory control, claims submission and other administrative tasks.
Job Requirement:
Education: High School Diploma, some college preferred with an aptitude for mathematical calculation. Pharmacy Technician License required.
Experience: Retail pharmacy, claim reconciliation or accounting background helpful.
Other: Must have a high degree of organizational skills as well as computer and applications skills. Ability to work efficiently and effectively while adhering to federal and state pharmacy laws. Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and communication skills both written and verbal.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Input customer and prescription data into pharmacy computer system. Create prescription labels, accurately retrieve medication for dispensing, and place medication into prescription containers, done under supervision of pharmacist and in accordance with local and federal law.
  • Ensure excellent customer service in the Retail Pharmacy department.
  • Using aseptic technique, accurately prepares Compounded Sterile Products (CSP), including anticancer chemotherapeutic medications under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pharmacist.
  • Insures the safety of all patients and personnel by following CHCWM protocols and NIOSH/OSHA guidelines for preparation, delivery, and disposal of potentially cytotoxic agents.\
  • Inventory control and accurate handling of pharmaceuticals, packing slips and invoices.
  • Handle telephone inquiries, and assist in resolving issues and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Ensure claims are properly filed in the QS-1 NRx environment. Enter customer purchases into Point-of- Sale system.
  • Enters physician orders correctly, checks patient profiles, allergies, duplicate therapies and drug interactions for review by a Pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional. Precisely charges and credits patients, nursing units, and other facilities for medications dispensed from Pharmacy. Monitors and maintains drug (including controlled substances), research, indigent, and sample inventories and associated logs.
  • Accept telephone prescriptions and refills from physician offices as well as written prescriptions from patients. Complete paperwork related to filling prescriptions.
  • Function as a team member by expanding his/her responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.
  • Communicate and interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHCWM staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients/family members and demonstrates sensitivity in regards to cultural diversity, age specific needs and confidentiality

Work Environment:
Able to see clearly in an environment which is equipped with typical lighting. Able to perform manual tasks that require the use of fine muscle motor skills. Able to walk approximately one mile per workday. Able to lift 50 pounds. Able to stand and / or sit for prolonged periods. Able to freely bend/stretch. Able to access, input and retrieve information from computer. Able to accurately perform basic math calculations. Able to tolerate frequent handwashing. Very fast-paced and ever changing office environment. Demanding regarding deadlines and time frames. Very detailed and challenging work. Constant demand for updating knowledge. Potential of being exposed to cytotoxic substances (potentially mutagenic).
