Canby School District is Hiring an Instructional Assistant III - Science Tutor Near Canby, OR

Canby High School is hiring a full-time Science Tutor, to begin August 30, 2022.

About This Position

Tutors perform a variety of tutorial assignments with students and/or related clerical assignments under the direction of a teacher. 

Essential Functions

  • Tutor students in all levels of high school science in all disciplines (biology, chemistry & physics)
  • Maintain an open line of communication with teachers in a timely and effective manner
  • Facilitate make-up labs
  • Administer make-up and re-take exams
  • Potentially oversee and monitor peer tutors
  • Available after school for 1-1.5 hours daily and during student lunch time (flex hours accordingly)
  • Lab preparation if students are not present. maintains and do inventory of lab equipment
  • Supervise student activities in school environment; report rule infractions, resolve disruptions, etc., as necessary

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to follow district policies and procedures
  • Detail oriented lab skills
  • Ability to help collect data using scientific instruments
  • Ability to multi-task with tests, labs and other work
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment when administering make-up labs
  • Proficiency in all levels of high school, with ability to explain science from various reasoning techniques in order to accommodate individual students' needs
  • Ability to effectively communicate, in writing and orally, with students, staff, and community patrons
  • Ability to consistently model appropriate use of spoken and written English language; prefer second language communication ability
  • Prefer skills in computer literacy, with reasonable knowledge of office practices and procedures
  • Ability to act and respond calmly in high stress situations and make appropriate independent judgments within prescribed policies and procedures
  • Ability to learn and understand legal rights and responsibilities of students and staff
  • Genuine enjoyment and understanding of children and awareness of the general purposes and goals of public education
  • Ability to successfully complete criminal history records check as required by statute and district policy
  • Physical and mental skills and abilities needed to perform essential functions of the position

Minimum Requirements

  • 72 college level credits or successful completion of a paraprofessional highly qualified certification/willingness to complete within 30 days of hire
  • Provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or request approval of a medical or non-medical exception using the appropriate Oregon Health Authority’s request form

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish; candidates who successfully complete the Spanish literacy assessment will be placed at Level L of the classified salary schedule

Compensation

  • The Instructional Assistant III - Science Tutor position is at Level K of the classified salary schedule and is based on a 182-day/9-month work year
  • The estimated beginning salary for this position is $17.33-$18.38 per hour; however, highly experienced candidates may be placed higher on the salary schedule at hiring
    • Applicants who hold a Bachelor's degree will automatically be placed at Step 3

  • In addition to this salary, the Canby School District will pay the employee’s 6 percent PERS contribution
