We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to support the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of research initiatives with intra/extramural divisions.
  • Prepare research materials for federal staff review.
  • Assist in the development, management, and evaluation of operations research.
  • Assist with technical data science consultations across a broad range of ODSET and NIAID activities; has technical expertise in subareas of data science.
  • Assist in the development and management of the data science training program.
  • Assist with implementation of policy, create guidance, best practices, and training materials for policy related to data sharing and use.
  • Assist with coordinating data policy implementation; support the Genomic Program Administrator and Data Access Committee.
  • Assist with the data science outreach program, including development of online materials, the NIAID data science website, blog posts, newsletters, social media posts, etc.; organize workshops and the data science webinar series.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team in ODSET, contribute diverse knowledge and skills; demonstrate abililty to bridge biomedical and data science domains.
  • Assist with managing operations of the data science research, training, policy, and outreach operations through maintaining of operational systems, data registrations, budget tracking, and similar operations.
  • Develop and manage efforts to improve compliance of NIAID data assets with Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable (FAIR) Guiding Principles.
  • Develop approaches to create and improve machine-actionable, FAIR-compliant metadata based on structured vocabularies and ontologies.
  • Make recommendations for standard schemas and machine-actionable representations for metadata and data in the NIAID mission area.
  • Assist with the design and management of the NIAID Data Ecosystem, especially with the use of ontologies and machine-actionable metadata.
  • Collaborate with ODSET’s DATA Scholar on the project to develop an AI-Ready Data Ecosystems for Pandemic Prepared, by representing knowledge in machine-actionable format based on ontologies and semantic technologies. 

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field.
  • A doctoral degree in a biomedical discipline and graduate training in biomedical informatics or a related data science field is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of computer science, systems analysis, and systems programming.
  • Demonstrates exceptional oral and written communications, including ability to apprise/update senior staff and communicate technical content to diverse audiences.
  • Research experience in ontologies related to infectious diseases is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and use of ontologies and semantic technologies applied to infectious diseases is preferred.
