Job Title: Senior Vice President, or Vice President, Voting Rights & Redistricting

Position Summary

Campaign Legal Center (CLC) is hiring for a highly experienced litigation leader as Senior Vice President, or Vice President, Voting Rights & Redistricting. The Senior Vice President or Vice President is responsible for ensuring that CLC achieves its mission of advancing voter freedom, ending election policies that harm vulnerable communities, and ensuring fair election maps. Reporting to the incumbent Senior Vice President for the duration of 2024 and to the Executive Director beginning in 2025, the SVP/VP oversees the strategic direction of CLC’s voting rights and redistricting programs. The SVP/VP also serves as a distinguished litigation expert, advising on significant litigation matters across CLC’s program areas and supervising CLC’s strategic litigation team. As a member of the Executive Team, the SVP/VP collaborates with CLC’s other senior executives to establish and advance organization-wide priorities. The SVP/VP serves as one of CLC’s primary outward-facing representatives, representing CLC in relationships with external partners, including allies, funders, journalists, and legislators. Responsibilities

Programmatic

  • Collaborate with all program leaders to set strategic priorities for CLC’s voting rights and redistricting programs and monitor advancement of those priorities, including by identifying tactics and theories of change to achieve CLC’s goals and by implementing adjustments as needed.
  • Supervise the Senior Directors and Directors who manage CLC’s voting rights, redistricting, and strategic litigation teams.
  • Provide strategic and tactical advice to CLC’s campaign finance and anti-sabotage litigation. 
  • Serve as a member and leader of CLC’s Litigation Strategy Council, a national group of distinguished advisors.
  • Foster collaboration and consistency among programs and ensure smooth working relationships between program teams and other CLC departments.
  • Ensure resource allocations are consistent with programmatic priorities.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, represent CLC in media appearances.
  • Represent CLC in relationships with allied organizations and members of Congress.
  • Draft and review legal work product and publications.
  • Monitor external events and political developments with potential to affect CLC’s work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Some travel required.

Executive

  • Identify and implement improvements in organizational management.
  • Monitor and support employee morale in response to challenging external environments.
  • Advance CLC’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • In collaboration with the Development team, represent CLC to funders and support CLC’s fundraising efforts.
  • Advise other executives on matters of organizational importance.
  • Engage with Board members.
  • Coordinate with the General Counsel to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum experience for Vice President: 
    • At least 12 years of legal experience, including at least 5 years of supervisory legal experience
    • Extensive litigation experience at the trial and appellate levels
    • Experience with voting rights and/or redistricting cases
  • Minimum experience for Senior Vice President: 
    • At least 15 years of legal experience, including at least 10 years of supervisory legal experience
    • Extensive litigation experience at the trial and appellate levels
    • Experience with Supreme Court practice
    • Experience with voting rights and redistricting cases
  • Proven ability to devise and implement legal and organizational strategies in a challenging environment
  • Exceptional ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • Active membership in the DC bar in good standing, or eligibility to waive into the DC bar
  • Commitment to the nonpartisan nature, DEI values, and overall mission of CLC
  • Experience with one or more of the following is preferred but not required: democracy-related legislation or regulations; campaign finance reform; government ethics
