LABORATORY MANAGER

Branch Manager for day-to-day laboratory responsibilities and Laboratory

Director for quality systems responsibilities.

3.0Position Summary

Manages and coordinates laboratory functions for the branch. Provides guidance, leadership and training to laboratory staff on routine matters. Responsible for taking the necessary steps to ensure that all laboratory functions and resources are run safely, accurately and efficiently.

4.0Minimum Requirements

•Requires a B.S. (preferable Chemistry degree) with a minimum of five years general laboratory experience or three years experience in a petroleum laboratory.

•Must possess managerial and inter-personal skills. 

•Must be able to distinguish color.

•Must pass pulmonary test for respirator use.

5.0Responsibilities

•Acts as the liaison between Laboratory Coordinator and general laboratory staff with respective Branch Manager, Operations Department and Laboratory Director.

•Works closely with Operations Department to obtain day-to-day analytical testing requirements based upon nominations received from clients in order to provide accurate, reliable results on a timely basis. Works directly with customers for laboratory submitted samples if required.

•Ensures that laboratory staff and visitors follow all documented safety requirements as defined by the company safety program.

•Uses judgment and discretion in directing, coordinating and scheduling the work activities of laboratory staff consistent with accepted operating practices and procedures, including periods during non-working hours, weekends and holidays.

•Receives, compiles, and verifies the data resulting from laboratory analyses and ensures accurate and complete preparation of applicable reports as per standard procedures.

•Works in conjunction with the Laboratory Director to maintain internal quality control / quality assurance program to ensure the use of standard laboratory practices.

•Works with laboratory staff to analyze and compile round robin and quality control sample results to ensure operating efficiency of process and/or testing equipment.

•Ensures the laboratory has the equipment and supplies necessary to meet customer demands and established quality program. Manages equipment and supply inventory, including scheduledpreventive maintenance requirements of the equipment. Coordinates the replacement or repair of faulty equipment or supplies as needed.

•Responsible for the maintenance and control of the sample retain area, including standard cradle-to-grave sample requirements and waste disposal.

•Ensures that laboratory staff is qualified to perform necessary testing and meets the training / refresher training requirements of the quality system. Ensures Test Method Assessments

•(TMA’s) are conducted as per the required procedure and schedule.

•Using advanced knowledge gained in the laboratory, identifies the root causes of quality system problems (customer, specifications or Camin Cargo system) in respective areas of responsibility and uses good judgment to independently troubleshoot, initiate, recommend, and/or implement timely solutions to the problems.

6.0Fitness for Duty – Physical Demands

Workday may consist of 8-12 hours however this can vary day to day and shift to shift. Some of the retain work is performed outdoors, wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and could include possible exposure to high and low temperatures for a prolonged duration of time. Laboratory work is normally performed indoors under climate-controlled conditions.
