Position: SEI Math Teacher & SLIFE Math Interventionist, Grades 9-12

Overview of Cambridge Public Schools

The Cambridge Public Schools (CPS), in partnership with our families and community, provides all students with rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning as well as the social, emotional, and academic supports each student needs to achieve their goals and post-secondary success as engaged community members. About 7,000 students choose CPS each year, and our diverse student enrollment continues to rise. Over 30% of CPS students speak a language other than English at home, and over 70 languages are spoken by our families. Among the most common are Spanish, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, and Portuguese. Our schools proudly embrace this diversity.

The Role:

The SEI Math teacher will teach math to English Learners in grades 9-12 in the Sheltered English Immersion Program at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School using the Math Department Curriculum, the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks and appropriate English language development pedagogy. In addition, this teacher will provide small group intervention to SLIFE students who require additional math foundational skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan grade-level math lessons using the SIOP Framework that are appropriately scaffolded for English learners.
  • Modify math department curriculum to fit the academic, linguistic, and literacy needs of EL/SLIFE students.
  • Work cooperatively with personnel from the MLE Department, Math Department, and CRLS staff.
  • Provide culturally responsive instruction for multilingual learner students. 
  • Attend school-based and department professional learning opportunities 
  • Keep accurate grades and communicate with parents on a regular basis throughout the year.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities, reflect on current practices, and incorporate best practices into daily lessons.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Director of Multilingual Learner Education, MLE Lead Teacher, and/or Principal

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming SEI Math Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Educator License in Math (8-12) and SEI Endorsement required; ESL (5-12) license preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • At least one year of experience working in a linguistically diverse or urban setting preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn to access data in educational systems such as Google Suite for Education, Aspen, and ELLevation
  • A willingness to engage in further training and coursework to build instructional capacity to meet the needs of all learners
  • Engage with families and builds collaborative, culturally responsive, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning
  • Proficiency in English and fluency in a language other than English (Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Somali, Arabic, or other language) preferred, but not required.
