Cambridge Public Schools is Hiring a 2024 Summer Charge Nurse Near Cambridge, MA

Description of Service Opportunity:
The 2024 Summer Charge Nurse will serve as the point of contact for up to 7 Summer Building Nurses, taking primary responsibility for scheduling staff coverage and providing medical advice and resources. In addition, the Charge Nurse will provide medical support and advice to buildings without an assigned onsite nurse.
The Summer Charge Nurse will report to the Summer and Vacation Week Program Manager, with support from the CHA school nurse manager.

The Summer Building Nurse will be available from 8am - 2:00 pm (30 hrs per week) for 4 weeks, from Monday July 8 - Friday August 2nd. In addition, the Summer Charge Nurse will work up to 10 hours of pre-program preparation, including staff scheduling, records management and orientation.

Nurses will be hired to support one of the following buildings: CRLS, Fletcher Maynard Academy, M.L. King/ PAUS, Kennedy-Longfellow/VLUS, King Open/CSUS, Morse, Peabody/RAUC, and Tobin. The charge nurse will be assigned to one of these sites. In the event that all positions are not filled, nurses will be required to support two buildings. Duties will include:

  • Coordinates coverage of all program sites, including staff schedules and management of per-diem staff to cover absences.
  • Coordinates staff record keeping processes and access to student records. maintaining up to date CPS student health information for the summer.
  • Promote and support COVID safety protocols, including appropriate procedures for students exposed or displaying symptoms of COVID-19 infection.
  • Oversee and administer medication; per student medical records and IEP/ 504 plans.
  • Respond appropriately to health emergencies, and offer appropriate First Aid.
  • Assess the social and emotional climate for the students.
  • Help establish a positive school culture and climate where every child feels safe and respected.
Minimum Requirements:

Must be a Registered Nurse, Licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant.
Must have three (3) to five (5) years of experience in nursing, with Charge nurse experience
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to be empathic and listen to others.
Preference will be given to current CHA employees.
Experience working with youth. Nursing experience within a school setting preferred.

Length of Contract:
June 1, 2024 - August 4th, 2024

Contract Amount:
Not to exceed $10,640 ($76 per hour)
