Salary Range: $3,105 - $5,995 per month. Hiring salary budgeted at $3,105 - $4,584 per month commensurate with a combination of education and experience.

Position Summary: The Athletics department at California State University Maritime Academy includes 15 intercollegiate programs, 8 NAIA programs and 7 club programs. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will work with all of our intercollegiate programs and other sports/duties as assigned. The incumbent will assist with the direct provision of injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation services for intercollegiate student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will work in collaboration with the Sports Medicine staff, the Head Athletic Trainer, and the Team Physicians.Job responsibilities will include prescribing routine and corrective exercises and treating chronic injuries and related disabilities to maintain student athlete performance.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY:
Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.
Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves as first responder by recognizing and evaluating injuries.
  • Uses a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity, rehabilitation and exercise equipment, and apply bandages, tapes and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
  • Prescribes routine and corrective exercises to strengthen muscles.
  • Treats chronic injuries and related disabilities to maintain student athlete performance.
  • Counsels student athletes regarding proper conditioning, athletic training and injury rehabilitation.
    In addition, daily operations for the athletic training room include but are not limited to the following:
  • Sport team responsibilities/assignments as specified by the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Communication with coaches and student-athletes of assigned teams.
  • Assist in coverage of athletic training clinic open hours.
  • Travel as required/needed with sports teams.
  • Access for patient athlete appointments with the medical staff, and coordination with physicians/medical personnel regarding care of student-athletes.
  • Injury reporting, documentation, and maintenance of medical charts.
  • Assist with insurance claims.
  • Appropriate training and adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g. blood-borne pathogen training and prevention, annual TB testing, and other health screening requirements).
  • Maintenance and upkeep of the athletic training room and inventory.
    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Knowledge:
    General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.
    Abilities:
    Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.
    Education: Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.
    License and Certifications: Must possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.
    Current CPR/AED certification. Must possess a valid California Driver's License
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Additional related education and training.
  • Additional experience as a certified athletic trainer in competitive athletics at the professional and/or Olympic level.
  • Experience with advanced manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
  • Additional certifications in instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and myofascial decompression.
    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
    PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing, involves lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity
    HOURS of WORK/TRAVEL: Will work non-traditional hours as needed including weekends and evenings. Will travel as needed with sports teams.
    BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, fingerprinting and DMV records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
