Salary Range: $5,025.00 - 7,159.00/month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,025.00 - 6,092.00/month.

About the Position:
The purpose of Veteran Students Services is to provide wraparound student support services to all CSUEB veteran students. Program services are organized around two key services: (1) one-on-one holistic academic counseling that includes academic advisement, career & goal planning, scholarship guidance, graduate school advising, guidance on balancing academic and personal life, and (2) processing educational benefits and benefits coaching/guidance on the effective use of VA benefits and/or other resources to achieve your education and career goals.
The primary purpose of this position is to function as the Veteran Student Services' School Certifying Official and to work closely with CSUEB veteran students when they request to use their Veteran Affairs education benefits. The secondary purpose is to support the programming offered for veteran students. This position will work closely with the Veterans Retention Coordinator to develop, plan, and implement programs relevant to, and needed for, veteran students.
Responsibilities:
Veteran Student Services’ School Certifying Official:
  • Work with outreach counselors in supporting veteran students prior to admission.
  • Ensure students have completed a degree plan with an advisor.
  • Process all Veterans Educational Benefits Certification Requests within two weeks of receipt or no later than 30 days prior to the first day of instruction to ensure veteran students receive their benefits in a timely manner. Use PeopleSoft, OnBase, Tungsten, and VA Once platforms as needed for this task. Accurately record and document all changes which may impact veteran students’ benefits.
  • Stay current with new veteran policies and/or changes and adjust internal forms and processes accordingly. Ensure all students are aware of the changes and how their benefits are impacted. Assist them on choosing the appropriate program that would benefit them the most.
  • Serve as the primary contact for veteran students, and dependents, regarding any issues pertaining to their VA education benefits by working with staff from appropriate areas (i.e., Financial Aid, Housing, Student Financial Services, Pioneer Bookstore) to resolve issues in a timely manner. This often requires creative solutions and sensitivity to students’ individual needs.
  • Manage the veterans’ student groups in PeopleSoft.
  • Prepare for state and federal audits. If an audit includes a campus visit, coordinate logistics.
  • Prepare application and reports for University catalog approval process. Complete and submit the catalog to CSAAVE no later than August 31st each year.
  • Use ArmyIgnitED (or other designated program) and MyCAA to report grades for veterans in these programs no later than two weeks after grades have been posted each term.
  • Work closely with Pioneer Bookstore staff to promptly provide notification of veteran students’ enrolled units. This enables veteran students to purchase course materials in a timely manner.
Programming events for veteran students and other administrative responsibilities:
  • Provide lead work, as needed, to Peer Mentors who assist with VSS outreach, administrative tasks and activities.
  • Serve as Chair of the Veterans Advisory Committee, which is comprised of faculty and staff from various departments on campus. Hold at least one meeting per academic term and invite other constituents from off campus (i.e., veteran related agencies) to attend. Topics may include the coordination of services across campus to veterans, planning of veteran events, and off campus activities for veteran students.
  • Plan and staff veteran resource/information tables at campus events such as Orientations, Welcome Day, and Preview Day. (These events may be on weekends and/or in the evenings.)
  • In collaboration with the Veterans Retention Coordinator, plan and coordinate various programs and events to provide additional supports for veteran students (i.e. Veteran Student Mixer, SALUTE induction ceremonies, Veteran Graduation Celebration, VA Healthcare Visits). As appropriate, include staff, faculty and community resources.
  • Respond to requests for reports from the Chancellor’s Office. Independently acquire information and data needed to report. Facilitate visits from the Chancellor’s Office regarding veteran student services.
Other duties as assigned:
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
  • May be called upon to support university special events, (i.e., Honors Convocation, Commencement Ceremonies) which may occur on weekends and/or evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of higher education practices;
  • Knowledge of outreach techniques to reach various populations of the campus community;
  • Knowledge of campus policies and practices;
  • Knowledge of campus community resources; and
  • General knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends of the Student Services field.
Abilities and/or Skills:
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and act accordingly;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, staff, and community members;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, Google tools, and other basic office software;
  • Experience using complex databases and spreadsheets;
  • Excellent writing ability and working knowledge of general statistical and data collection procedures;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals, departments, and organizations, as well as the ability to work independently; and
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed to support university special events.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, social service, or related field.
  • Experience working with special populations such as veterans, low income, disabled, and first-generation college students.
  • Knowledge of CSUEB policies and procedures.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.
