Job Description and Duties
This position is based at the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care & Research Center (MWVCRC), an exciting work location where staff are engaged in scientific research on marine wildlife health and pathology. The facility is designed to be used to care for sea otters and other wildlife affected by oil spills. The incumbent will have three broad areas of responsibility, under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor: 1) coordinating oil spill readiness at the MWVCRC for sea otters, including coordination with the Oiled Wildlife Care network, and assisting in development of protocols, trainings, and drills; 2) assisting the Veterinary Specialist with pathology studies on sea otters, including oversight of Scientific Aids, maintenance of a a database related to this work, and participation in original scientific research; and 3) acting as the facility Health and Safety Officer and facility Chemical Hygiene Officer at the MWVCRC. Working Conditions
Field work may require incumbent to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in all types of habitats that may require working beyond a traditional 8-hour work day. Office work requires use of a computer keyboard and conversing on phones for several hours of the day. In a laboratory and in adherence to standard safety protocols, incumbent occasionally may be exposed to formalin and other laboratory chemicals, and to radiation from x-rays. Public contact work may require irregular hours, the wearing of a state uniform, and operation state vehicles with a valid drivers license. OSPR is a 24-hour oil and pollution spill response organization. The incumbent in this position can be required to participate in prevention and response training, drills, and incidents throughout California, and to be available to deploy/travel via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.) with short notice. Travel may include multiple days of overnight stay, up to seven (7) days dependent upon departmental need.
