COMPANY DESCRIPTION

California Bioenergy LLC (CalBio) is one of the country’s leading developers of dairy digester projects. Our projects generate renewable natural gas and electricity which is used as a vehicle fuel to power clean trucks, buses, and cars. Founded in 2006, CalBio works closely with local dairy farmers, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC), the California Energy Commission (CEC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the dairy industry to develop projects that reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), protect local air and water quality, create local jobs, and provide a new revenue stream along with other meaningful benefits to its dairy partners. Along with its affiliates, Midwest Bioenergy, Northwest Bioenergy, and Southwest Bioenergy, CalBio is undertaking the development, construction, ownership, and operation of dozens of dairy digester projects across the country.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Safety Technician will work under the supervision of the Director of EHS to provide site safety support for California Bioenergy operating locations to prevent and mitigate employee injuries and illnesses. The Safety Technician will inspect work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with company, State, and Federal safety policies and regulations to ensure California Bioenergy remains in compliance with all governmental regulations. Responsibilities also include documenting safety inspections, citing dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strong personal presence at the worksite helping employees learn to recognize hazard and protect themselves and their co-workers.
  • Implement hazard control designs, methods, procedures, and programs; and advise and educate others.
  • Measure the effectiveness of hazard control elements.
  • Observe task performance to ensure compliance with site and regulatory requirements.
  • Document and track results to support safety program elements.
  • Support the Director of EHS with incident investigations to identify root cause, determine corrective actions.
  • Support the larger Operations team in the implementation of corrective actions identified.
  • Support Construction team on-site as needed.
  • To serve on and assist in the management of the Safety Committee.
  • Conduct behavior-based safety observations and coach employees as required.
  • Assist Director of EHS in monitoring of environmental permit requirements including requirements for California Water Board, San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, Environmental Protection Agency, CalOSHA and the various county CUPA agencies.
  • Assist operations team contact and remove hazardous waste from sites as needed.
  • Identify PPE needs for Operations team and assist in acquiring PPE as needed.
  • Coordinate on use of online lockout/tagout and inspection system to ensure completeness and consistency.
  • Assist in conducting periodic LCRS/Lysimeter pump outs at digesters as needed to maintain permit requirements.
  • Assist Director of EHS and Maintenance team that EHS job tasks are completed in eMaintenance and follow up with Operations teams when tasks are not completed on time.
  • Assist Operations team to respond to dig alerts in the field.
  • Work with Operations team on JHA program and assist team to complete JHAs as needed.
  • Monitor site security during site visits and present any concerns to Director of EHS to be addressed.
  • On an as needed basis, meet with lab testing company on location to assist.
  • Assist in the identification and execution of any specialty training needed for the CalBio team.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT

Performance will be assessed 90 days after initial hire, and then annually after that. Safety Technician will be measured against Operations safety performance, utilization of safety observations and adherence to permits and regulations. The successful technician will be measured against adherence to company policy and ability to drive sustained safety behaviors and conditions through personal effort, communication, teamwork, and ability to leverage external resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of 4 years of high school or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Completion of OSHA 30 for General Industry or Construction preferred.
  • Experience in identifying potential hazards and risks and the ability to correct these risks.
  • Influential leadership skills sufficient to coach and train employees in the field
  • Knowledge of OSHA health and safety policies and regulations.
  • Willingness to work in the field or from a vehicle more than 75%.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices during task performance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication required.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based applications (Outlook, Word, and Excel) on a PC or tablet required.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to operate a motor vehicle in California is required.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize job duties, and work in a fast-paced environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work locations are industrial and agricultural, primarily outdoors in the Central Valley of California. Temperatures range from 40 deg F in the winter to 115 deg F in the summer. Limited exposure to hazardous materials and/or toxic fumes will require the use of approved personal protective equipment. Regular exposure to heat, noise, flammable materials, rotating equipment, and other conditions normally encountered in an industrial environment should be expected. California Bioenergy will ensure all applicable work rules and safety requirements are closely adhered to.

This position will require heavy lifting (<50 lbs) and/or climbing ladder and/or stairs.
