The Principal Architect position resides in the Wired department at CableLabs. This department focuses on developing new scalable network solutions for the cable industry. Our team plays a crucial role in specifying, testing, and generally moving the industry quickly toward deployment of these new solutions.
Why This Role Is Exciting The position requires experience in wireline technologies used in the cable industry (e.g., DOCSIS, PON, etc). It requires direct hands-on experience with RF/coaxial communication systems and the related testbeds and devices, including HFC cable networks. This position will initially focus on RF communication system testing and validation, with future opportunity to focus on optical communication systems. The impact of your work will be evident as cable operators move toward their continuing domination of the broadband industry. We are looking for someone who is comfortable connecting, testing, and troubleshooting technology in a lab environment, as well as being at ease collaborating with a group of technologists discussing and defining next-generation technology.

What You’ll Do
- Serve as the RF/physical layer expert for the Wired Technologies team, including leading working groups related to DOCSIS technologies
- Serve as the team interface for troubleshooting of RF-related issues discovered during certification testing
- Lead testing and validation of current and next-generation wired networks, including DOCSIS-based HFC and passive optical networking technologies:
- Participate in innovation and creation of new technologies for next-generation access network architectures and systems
- Identify new requirements, key parameters, and application scenarios for next-generation wired access networks
- Ideate and develop innovative concepts based on state-of-the-art innovations, including RF access network architectures, the deployment of next generation RF access networks, and RF-optical-wireless network convergence
- System implementation and prototyping
- Support proof-of-concept demonstrations, field trial testing
- Interface with cable operators and technology vendors to develop and test products based on current and next-generation DOCSIS™ technology
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical and/or computer engineering or similar field, or equivalent experience
- 10 years of education and lab expertise in wireline communications
- In-depth understanding of operation and functioning of DOCSIS physical layer technology is strongly desired
- Familiar with testing, debugging and evaluation of communication systems
- Hands-on experience with communication components/subsystems/systems and test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, noise generators
- Experience with RF modulation theory, spectral analysis, and device physics
- Familiarity with coaxial cable, optical, and wireless access networks and the corresponding standards and specifications (DOCSIS, Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G, xPON)
- Experience with network switches and routers (L2L3)
- Experience and working knowledge of RF scattering parameter testing (S-parameters)
