Job Description – Lead Operator

General Description

The Lead Operator has comprehensive knowledge and ability to operate all types of construction equipment. Additionally, the Lead Operator has a fundamental understanding of the construction process and ability to act as foreman on small jobs or in the absence of the Crew Foreman. The lead operator has the leadership capability to run and manage crews of 1 to 3 operators and laborers.

Lead Operator, Responsibilities:

Key Duties & Core Responsibilities

  • Follow direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
  • Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required
  • Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored
  • Advise the Foreman of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Participate in routine maintenance
  • Knowledge of excavation and civil construction
  • Fundamental ability and skill in operating equipment and power tools safely and efficiently by following proper loading and unload procedures
  • Fundamental understanding and ability to use GPS tools and controlled equipment
  • Understands the project plans and specifications
  • Maintains positive relationships with customers, subcontractors, suppliers and other employees
  • Promotes job site safety, encourages safe work practices and rectifies job site hazards immediately
  • Maintains an organized job site, including the construction office
  • Maintain daily log of activities and site conditions
  • Ensure accurate daily documentation of work orders/tickets and understand subcontractor scope of work to avoid unnecessary change orders
  • Communication: Displays strong written and oral communication skills and employs effective listening skills
  • Problem Solving: Analyzes problems and makes sound decisions in a timely manner based on objectives, risks, implications and costs
  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to lead a crew of 1 – 3 individuals

  • Maintains positive relationships with customers, subcontractors, suppliers and other employees
  • Tactful and mature demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with diverse personalities

Problem Solving

  • Analyzes problems and makes sound decisions in a timely manner based on objectives, risks, implications and costs
  • Empowers subordinates to make decisions in the field.

  • Mistakes happen. Use them as learning experiences.
  • Ask for help during trying times.
  • Use appropriate communication methods. Know your audience and understand appropriateness of email, text, phone call or in-person communication styles.
  • Foster positive relationships with ALL project stakeholders; including architects, engineers, neighbors, homeowners, subcontractors, and suppliers. A future project lead can come from unsuspected sources. Relationships are a catalyst for opportunity.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
