Job Description:

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Sample Analysis - Performs assigned sample determination utilizing various (GC, GC/MS, AA, ICP, ICPMS, IC, or HPLC) techniques, in accordance with standard operating procedures, including analysis, data evaluation, and reporting, ensuring that all method required quality control protocols be met.

Analytical duties may include: Reviewing sample work list and scheduling daily work, maintaining regular laboratory turn-around time including priority sample scheduling. Preparing samples according to standard operating procedures. Preparing calibration and quality control standards. Perform analytical steps in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Record quality control standards preparation, weight of samples, dilutions, spiked sample preparations, and analytical sequences in the appropriate logbooks/Element.

Review results to verify that minimum quality control requirements are met, calculate results, and report results in Element. Submit raw data packages for approval, according to department procedures.

Maintain quality control charts, as required by each method.

Report analytical results and quality control data in a manner that maximizes efficiency.

Troubleshooting:

Perform preliminary trouble-shooting functions when analyses and/or equipment fail to meet normal operational standards.

Record all scheduled and unscheduled repairs, including nature of trouble (symptoms), diagnostic steps, resolution and apparent prevention steps. Notifies technical services and department supervisor of unresolved problems.

Analytical methods improvement:

Under the direction of supervisor, improves existing methods when necessary, which could include: improving detection limits, increasing precision, increasing efficiency, decreasing consumable reagents, utilizing disposable lab ware, improving data handling.

Develops new methods under the direction of department supervisor and Senior Chemists. Ensures any method improvements and changes are included in standard operating procedures before analyzing samples Chemist and

Technician support:

Serves as mentor to chemists and technicians.

Provides training of methods for chemists.

Maintain equipment:

Maintain instrumentation and equipment on a regular basis.

Notify technical services and department supervisor when equipment failure occurs, or when major maintenance is required.

Document all maintenance in appropriate logbooks.

Supplies:

Ensures there is sufficient supply of consumables, including reagents, standards, disposable items,and service parts.

Orders all required items through the supply ordering process.

Documentation used (when applicable):

Standards log book for calibration standard preparation, spiking and surrogate solutions, etc. Method Run (sequence) logs Sample preparation/extraction logs Instrument maintenance logs Media logs Refrigerators, freezers and incubators temperature logs.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related Science field

3 - 6 years' experience

Preferred Skills/Attributes Microsoft (Excel & Word), computer oriented Excellent oral, written skills
