Brotherhood Crusade is Hiring a Literacy Tutor Near Los Angeles, CA

The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1968 to enrich the lives of youth, seniors, homeless populations, economically disadvantaged families, and under-served individuals in South Los Angeles by providing and facilitating a variety of essential educational services, social services, cultural activities, vocational opportunities and economic empowerment opportunities.

Brotherhood Crusade envisions a South Los Angeles devoid of health disparities, disenfranchisement, and poverty- associated adverse public health conditions. We believe that South Los Angeles can be a safe, thriving, culturally relevant, and inclusive community that provides all residents equitable access to human and social services and continually improves their quality of life. Our mission is to remove and/or help individuals overcome the barriers that deter their pursuit of success in life; effectuate academic and vocational success; provide opportunities for personal, social, and economic growth; promote access to artistic excellence and cultural awareness; increase financial literacy; facilitate opportunities for a better quality of life; and promote health and safety.

Position Summary Overview:

This position will focus on supporting the literacy development of a core group of at-risk 6th graders at certain LAUSD schools. The tutor will work in collaboration with Brotherhood Crusade Staff and credentialed teachers to support the development of low performing 6th graders in literacy.

Responsibilities

  • Attend mandatory Literacy Program Training
  • Monitor student participation in digital literacy programs
  • Lead small group (5 students) direct instruction based on appropriate intervention model
  • Monitor student academic progress based on online assessments and resources
  • Monitor and analyze literacy progress reports
  • Provide site supervision and support to Brotherhood Crusade Staff
  • Track and record student attendance, behavior, and performance
Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree required
  • Self-starter, organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience with teaching and/or managing K-6 students
  • Ability to engage and motivate middle school students in underserved communities
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Ability to communicate openly and effectively with all staff
  • Solutions oriented thinker with an emphasis on organization and execution
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of teaching literacy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and basic computer functions
  • Bilingual speakers (Spanish) is a plus for this role

$24 - $24 an hour

Compensation:

$24.00 per hour

Working Schedule: (10 Hours per week)

Mondays – Thursday 3:00-5:00pm, Friday, 2-Hour planning period

Must possess a valid California Driver's License and COVID-19 Vaccinated

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Due to our in-person and in office work with LAUSD, City of LA, County of LA and other work partners that require our team to be vaccinated we require that all potential candidates must be COVID-19 vaccinated with either, Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.

WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EQUIPMENT USED

The successful candidate will be required to report to and work from the office complex at least five days a week. Offices are traditionally equipped with computers, telephones, desks, chairs, and office machines. Additionally, each office offers an instructional classroom from which orientations and trainings are conducted.

SALARY RANGE:

Benefits and salary will be negotiated based on experience, education, and the needs of the program.

Must be available to work Monday- Friday from 9:00am – 5:30pm.

There may be occurrences when a work or community event occurs on Saturday and/or Sunday. Your work schedule will be flexed to accommodate this change and you will be notified in advance.
