HALL ADVISOR

  • Placement locations for new hires will be determined by management.


Job Summary:

Represent BYU and Residence Life in a professional and courteous manner as a live-in employee performing their normal employee and living activities in their employer provided apartment. Facilitate a pleasant, safe, and clean atmosphere so residents can have positive academic, spiritual, and social development.

Work schedule consists of regular on-duty/off-duty/on-call hours. This position advises nighttime Residence Life staff. This position would oversee some nighttime activities as assigned. Also, this position has weekend and holiday work.

This is a full-time LIVE-IN position in an on-campus residence hall. The hall advisor apartment may accommodate the hall advisor and his/her family (family is defined as hall advisor, spouse, and dependent children). Due to the nature of the position and the size of the hall advisor's apartment, applicants with more than TWO (2) children will not be eligible for consideration. All children must be under the age of six.

Housing area assignments are determined by department needs.


Student and Community Development

Be available for consultation with individuals or groups of residents.

Use behavioral process when students are not in compliance with Housing Guidelines, University Policy, health or safety issues, and legal violations. The process includes:

Educating and mentor residents in private

Documenting violations for Fair Process compliance

Reporting violations to area managers

Involvement in Fair Process student hearings

Referral to appropriate agencies and departments

Follow up with consequences

Understand the process of Community Standards and Student Development. Mentor communities to try and reach healthy community through appropriate communication.

Teach correct principles of agency and Community Standards to residents through mentoring R.A. s, instruction in hall meetings and by example.

Learn and use the seven step model for mediation with students in conflict. Mentor RAs in this process. Attend and help mediate roommate, floor and building conflicts.

Interpret and disseminate Housing Guidelines to residents.


Supervise Resident Assistants

Hire and train Resident Assistants in coordination with area management.

Coordinate schedule, calendaring, assignments and responsibilities for Resident Assistants.

Communicate regularly with Resident Assistants about specific resident concerns and problems.

Mentor Resident Assistants to learn the mission of Residence Life and BYU and connect them to their roles of Student Development, Community Development and Administrative assignments.


Advise Hall Councils

Advise Hall Representative and Hall Council members regarding hall activities.

Participate in hall, area activities and attend Hall Council meetings.


Manage Physical Needs of Residence Halls

Coordinate building custodial concerns with appropriate custodial staff.

Regularly inspect buildings for cleanliness and general repair.

Report needed repairs to appropriate personnel.

Follow-through on work orders to assure satisfactory completion.

Conduct regular cleanliness inspections of individual resident rooms and apartments.

Train residents on how to clean and what cleaning supplies work well.

Facilitate building safety and security, including locking doors.

Conduct monthly inspections of smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.

Be familiar with location of fire extinguishers, and be trained in their use for small fires.

Respond to emergency situations.

Act as Emergency Building Coordinator during emergencies, including evacuation of buildings and accounting for each resident.

Train residents in emergency procedures, including conducting an evacuation drill once each semester/term.


Administrative Assignments

Maintain accurate records of day-to-day involvement in the hall and with residents.

Submit detailed reports to management in a timely manner.

Keep management informed of all potential and continuing problems.

Make suggestions and referrals to management regarding policies and procedures.

Attend required staff meetings, team meetings and participate in scheduled training programs.

Attend and be involved in Resident Assistant training.

Support and teach training sessions and seminars (as needed).

Promote re-occupancy.

Provide housing services to summer guests.

Assist in assigned projects consistent with job description.

Assist in determining resident room assignments.

Education/Experience:


Minimum education/experience:
Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience


Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

This position requires an understanding of administrative and student behavioral skills. This position requires supervisory, office, facility management, interviewing, computer, teaching, lesson plan development, writing, programming, crisis intervention, student development skills and experience, and mature judgment. This position also requires the ability to work with a broad range of people, including adolescents.
