General Summary:

The Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to assist with multiple ongoing research projects led by a Principal Investigator in a part-time role. This position is based in Boston and is for a minimum of 12 hours a week and up to 32 hours per week pending grant funding. The role starts in July 2024, but there could be flexibility to start a couple months earlier or later for the right candidate. The time commitment is at least one year, although two or more years is desirable. This position may also include the opportunity for travel to South Africa with the PI.

Example projects include:

  • Using mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) research to engage migrant men in HIV prevention services in Johannesburg
  • Using mixed methods research to engage mining communities in South Africa in HIV prevention programs
  • Designing and evaluating curricula for medical students on storytelling in medicine

The RA will need to function well in both independent and team settings. S/he will be expected to ensure that no tasks fall through the cracks, anticipate issues to the best of his/her ability, and be extremely organized. The Principal Investigator will depend heavily on the RA to ensure that no projects are held up for reasons within our control. S/he must be able to juggle many tasks at once, be able to see tasks to completion, and overcome any administrative delays or barriers. S/he is expected to be a proactive member of the entire Division of Global Health Equity team and a key problem-solver. Outstanding writing skills is a plus, and experience with qualitative and/or quantitative analysis is helpful, though not required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate aspects of data collection and management
  • Assist with project-related administrative tasks
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist in the preparation of presentations and publications
  • Aid in the preparation of documents for IRB submissions
  • Assist in analyses of qualitative and quantitative data (coding and analysis)
  • Help prepare grant applications
  • Organize group meetings, including setting up conference calls and taking minutes
  • Serve as a primary liaison to international partners
  • Assist in quantitative data entry, analysis, and presentation in abstracts, posters and manuscripts

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree is a must. This is a perfect job for a person considering a career in the health professions or currently in graduate school.
Previous research experience is an asset, but not required.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings
  • Ability to work well with collaborators across a range of roles, countries and cultures
  • Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Must have experience with literature reviews
  • Capacity to organize and manipulate large amounts of data
  • Interest in research, public health, global health, health policy, economics, and/or medicine
  • Excellent English language (spoken and written) skills
  • Familiarity with statistical programming software is a plus
  • Prior experience with IRB submissions or grant writing is desirable
  • Experience working in global health with partners in other countries.
