Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Executive Director of School Turnaround will be responsible for the overall turnaround efforts for the Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools (low performing schools) within the district. The Executive Director of School Turnaround will supervise the principals of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools, and ensure that resources dedicated to support the turnaround initiative are aligned to effective school improvement strategies, leading to increased student achievement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools, with records of persistent underperformance, by providing supports, guidance, interventions and new strategies
Oversees the development and monitors the implementation of School Improvement Plans, built on comprehensive school planning models
Drives change by example using leadership characteristics and strategies that are proven effective in turning around low-performing schools
Works with Tier 2 and Tier 3 principals to diagnose, plan and implement scientifically-based school improvement strategies to increase the achievement of all students
Guides the provision of technical assistance, coordination of district resources and support, and collection and dissemination of best practices
Provides day-to-day guidance and support in decision making to the Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools, to facilitate overall school management in the fiscal, operational and programmatic areas
Facilitates collaborative planning meetings with school leadership teams
Collaborates with school leadership teams and district support teams to identify, assess and implement leadership growth, assessment, curriculum, professional development, technology or other changes necessary to improve educational outcomes
Continually assesses data to determine the effectiveness of all educational programs and class offerings in the schools
Tracks and reports on the progress of the School Improvement Plans of Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools. Conducts informal and formal site reviews
Communicates progress to key stakeholder groups and incorporates their input
Develops, supports, and facilitates the implementation of policies and procedures to guide school leadership teams and provide direct support systems for each school principal in the area of school improvement
Collaborates with the district department leaders to coordinate strategies and services to assist the schools
Assists schools in reviewing and evaluating the performance of teachers, other certified staff and non-certified staff
Evaluates the performance of the principals of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 schools
Performs other related duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Certified in Connecticut as an Intermediate Administrator (092)
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in the area of educational administration and supervision, educational leadership or related field
30 graduate hours of credit beyond the master's degree
Three (3) years of successful teaching experience or service
Five (5) years successful, full-time administrative or supervisory experience in an urban setting
Knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process, including curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development
Ability to understand and incorporate trends and research that impacts a quality education, with a focus on effective school organization and management, teacher and leader effectiveness
Committed to high academic standards for all students, with a successful record of improving student achievement, turning around school performance, closing achievement gaps and building a performance-based culture
Demonstrated successful experience in program planning, design, implementation and assessment
Demonstrated strong leadership and managerial skills
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to collaborate with the entire school-community in order to effect school improvement
Proficient in the use of computers and technology
