Brazoria County is Hiring a Deputy Constable - MUD 16 Near Angleton, TX

A majority of a deputy’s day-to-day activities will include the service of civil process. Other duties may require general supervision, monitoring vehicular traffic, issues traffic citations, removes dangerous and unlawful drivers and vehicles from the roadways. Checks facilities and properties for possible criminal activity and responds to and investigates reports of criminal activities and public and domestic disturbances. Prepares and maintains records, logs, and reports of activities, incidents and offenses.
Hours: Various hours, early morning, evenings, nights, and weekends Mostly 8 hour shifts (Subject to Call-Out) 72 hours in MUD and 8 hours as assigned 
  • Responsible for patrol duties within the MUD District boundaries and adjacent areas.
  • Responsible for public relations and outreach within the MUD district boundaries
  • Attend MUD and HOA meetings as assigned.
  • Attend functions and gatherings within the MUD district boundaries.
  • Attend functions at the Hickory Creek Soccer complex as needed.
  • Maintain the MUD Cell phone and return calls as needed.
  • Communicates with the public, subordinates with other police agencies, victims, and other municipal, county and state employees on a professional on-going manner.
  • Assist in developing and implementing proactive methods of reducing both criminal and civil activities.
  • Perform patrol, investigations and court related duties as assigned.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed or requested immediately adjacent to the MUD district.
  • Inspects issued departmental equipment and supplies to insure proper operation and availability.
  • Responsible for the proper handling of evidence including identification, record keeping, preparation, security and storage.
  • Responsible for overseeing proper jailing procedures including book-in, fingerprinting, transporting and civil rights of prisoners.

  • Properly execute a traffic stop and violator contact. • Perform other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent; AND two years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be at least 21 years of age, have no past convictions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI or DUI), have no more than three moving violations within the last two years, not have ANY felony convictions, not have ANY misdemeanor convictions for any offense involving moral turpitude or family violence, must be a United States Citizen, and possess an honorable discharge if prior military service. Knowledge of:
  • County and state legal principles, practices, procedures regarding the criminal justice system.
  • Court settings.
  • Legal terminology and various state and federal codes and agencies.
  • Applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 
  • Current Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Family Code, Texas Government Code, Texas Property Code, juvenile laws, city ordinances, county regulations, departmental policies and procedures and other state, federal and local laws.
  • Skills and practices of a peace officer as presented in a certified police academy.
  • Safe handling and proper use of firearms, baton and other defensive weapons.
  • Civil and criminal rights.
Skillsets needed: 
  • Ability to maintain calm and self-control in highly stressful, potentially dangerous situations.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and related items.
  • Ability to read training manuals, laws publications, criminal reports, civil reports, memorandums, and other legal documents.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations as necessary to prepare departmental reports, activity reports and civil process reports.
  • Ability to understand and interpret reports, memorandums, and other correspondence.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles safely in situations of extreme speed and difficult driving conditions such as those encountered during pursuits.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods while performing job tasks.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate with one or both hands protective equipment such as a baton, firearms, flashlight, handcuffs, fire extinguisher and radio equipment.
  • Ability to both hear and talk oral communications in person and by radio and telephone.
  • Ability to perform duties both inside and out doors in extreme heat and cold.
  • Reading and interpreting legal documents;
  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, including writing routine correspondence, reports, and specialized legal documents;
  • Providing mature, experienced judgments during potentially hostile situations as well as regarding the legal and technical aspects of law enforcement;
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with judges, managers, supervisor, employees, external public agencies and organizations, attorneys, bonding companies and the general public;
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusion;
  • Performing effectively under stressful working conditions;
License & Certification Requirements:
Valid Texas Driver’s License
TCOLE Basic Peace Officer certification
TCOLE Basic Crime Prevention Specialist (Preferred)
Physical Demands & Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to a variety of environments to include, office, automobile, hospitals, jails, and courts of law. The employee is also exposed to outside weather conditions. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, and run. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. An applicant must be both physically and psychologically fir to perform duties as set out in policies.
Preemployment Expectations
Applicants offered positions with our office are required to do some preemployment test and evaluations. These tasks may or may not be paid for by Brazoria County, however, as a condition of employment, these must be done prior to employment. These are to include but not limited to, physical agility testing, drug panel(s), background checks, psychological evaluations, and others similar state and county requirements. The applicant needs to be ready to secure these results in a timely fashion when requested.
