JOB SUMMARY:

The Director, Creative Youth Development is responsible for the overall daily implementation of the vision and program strategy of the Innovation & Expression Studio. The Director, Creative Youth Development is accountable for the implementation of the Innovation & Expression Studio’s programs, services, personnel and financial resources, with particular focus on the contracted artists, community partners, cross-organizational collaboration, and part-time program staff. The position directs all studio programs and curricula for tween (middle school) and teen members (high school) and directs all special projects and supportive functions related.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Promotes an effective culture that embraces the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta’s mission and core values; establishes and maintains, in collaboration with staff and youth, an environment of physical and emotional safety based on respect at all levels.

Program Vision & Strategy:

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, executes and implements the artistic vision and focus of the Studio 
  • Maintains an awareness of current issues relating to the non-profit sector, specifically Creative Youth Development programs and the arts movement in Southwest Atlanta; stays up-to-date in the disciplines offered by the organization, teaching methods and arts education generally
  • Meets regularly with staff for planning and cross-functional collaboration; communicates and collaborates openly and frequently with all team members and community partners
  • Executes team action plans to ensure overall program quality and sustainability, role clarity across the Studio, family and volunteer engagement, and outcome-based evaluations
    1. Determines appropriate programs and services
    2. Collaborates with and acts as a liaison with partner agencies
    3. Gathers program data necessary for program reporting and tracking
    4. In partnership with Executive Artistic Director, reviews grant opportunities and proposals for the program
  • Execute the development and delivery of quality arts program schedule for tweens and teens (daily, weekly, Tracks, summer, annually), which includes contracted paid practicing teaching artists, community partnerships, and Boys & Girls Club personnel
  • Execute strategic, high-profile opportunities for youth artists to showcase their work and talents publicly 
  • Executes Summer Specialty Camps for non-Club members

Recruitment & Performance Management:

  • Oversees all teen-serving staff which includes, but is not limited to the following: 
    1. Interview potential instructors and, in partnership with Human Resources, comply with all hiring policies and procedures
    2. Cultivate and steward collaborative partnerships with community partners
    3. Provides all staff with onboarding, training and professional development opportunities
    4. Manages timesheets, mileage logs, and other management responsibilities related to supervising a team
    5. Frequent informal and formal performance observation and evaluation of staff
    6. In partnership with Human Resources, comply with all disciplinary and termination policies and procedures as needed
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, ensures the Innovation & Expression Studio has adequate and well-trained studio personnel to deliver its programs and services through proactive recruitment and retention efforts
  • Executes all teen-serving staff recruitment, on-boarding, training and provides high quality and frequent professional development opportunities, and, in partnership with the Director, Creative Youth Development I, evaluate all staff and artists in an appropriate manner
  • Ensures daily execution of specific job guidelines for all artists around their scope of work, boundaries, expectations and responsibilities, and ensure clear communication of these guidelines to all staff and artists 

Community Engagement:

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, builds and sustains the Innovation & Expression Studio as the primary arts-hub for Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta and a central arts-hub for Southwest Atlanta through frequent and high-profile opportunities, experiences, performances, and showcases at the Studio.
  • Stewards all community partnerships related to program strategy; implements and executes partnership programming as required per developed LOAs and MOUs

Administration:

  • Provide regular updates and communication on the program and performance of team to the Executive Director

All other duties as assigned

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Education

  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with preference for a degree in the arts, non-profit management, or similar field.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years building and leading teams with supervisory/managerial responsibilities 
  • Minimum of two years of professional and public experience in the arts or Creative Youth Development industry

Skills

  • In-depth understanding of non-profit organizations and Creative Youth Development
  • Has experience producing and presenting high-profile and public artistic events
  • Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Visionary and innovative thinker
  • Commitment to social emotional development in self, staff and youth, including enhanced self-awareness, self-management and relationship skills
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly articulate a vision, exhibit a commitment to quality and demonstrate with sensitivity to the complexities of managing a site with many stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrating arts and education programming into a broader community development agenda
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate openly, honestly and frequently with leadership teams (staff and youth)
  • Demonstrated commitment and dedication to the arts, youth development and leadership development
  • Listen, negotiate and collaborate with diverse groups and teams, and demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Deal effectively with a variety of stakeholders in coordinating activities and resolving problems
  • Commitment to organization-wide success, integration and collaboration while focused on a single site

Preferred:

  • Professional, practicing teaching artist in a recognized arts field

ENVIRONMENT & WORKING CONDITIONS:

Community-based location that serves youth, families and community members daily. Frequent host site for organizational and communal meetings and events. Frequent contact with employees, contracted artists and partners, community-based organizations, families, Club members, and community members. Frequent travel to Club locations and community partners. Frequent deadlines. Atypical work schedule, including evening and weekend work. The position requires walking and climbing stairs; Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
