Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii is Hiring a Teen Program Coordinator Near Honolulu, HI

Role: Teen Program Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Teen Services & Initiatives

Location: Honolulu-Based in Admin

Hours: 30 hours

Pay: $19-20/hour

The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Hawaii is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The after-school hours have become a critical time for youth – a time when many children in our communities are left to fend for themselves without positive adult supervision. We provide a safe place filled with hope and opportunity, ongoing relationships with caring adult mentors, and enriching programs.

Overview of the role

The Teen Program Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, coordination, and evaluation of teen-related programs and activities with the Clubhouses. This includes culturally relevant, leadership and “What’s Next” activities including, but not limited to, L.I.T programs, Truancy Prevention, Youth of the Year (YOY), and post-secondary education and workforce development initiatives. This position must communicate clearly, consistently, and effectively the needs and progress of teen members, outreach efforts and program effectiveness with the Director of Teen Services, Clubhouse Directors, Clubhouse staff and the rest of the organization to ensure teen outcomes are attained. 

Who you are

  • On your resume. Bachelor’s Degree preferred in relevant field from an accredited institution or some college.
  • A minimum of one year work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledgeable about secondary and post-secondary schools and technical/vocational programs.
  • Possess a current CPR and First Aid certificate (or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment).
  • Ability to work with teens and youth, including “at promise” youth.
  • Ability to interact with diverse personalities, in a non-emotional, non-confrontational manner always displaying tact, maturity and flexibility; and the ability to address and de-escalate crisis.
  • Communicate clearly, consistently and effectively the needs, challenges, and progress of teen members and programs to Director of Teen Services and other designated staff.
  • Ability to work independently as well as work well with others on a team.
  • Ability to organize activities and documents in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods of time at high levels of activity, managing multiple tasks with varying deadlines.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and ability to drive a 15 passenger van.
  • Possess physical skills to meet physical demands of all program activities.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, using word processing, spreadsheet, and database management.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of agencies and community organizations.
  • Able to work flexible days and hours (including weekends for fundraising events)

What you’ll do

Program Planning and Implementation

  • The Teen Program Coordinator is responsible for the overseeing, planning, coordinating, development, implementation and evaluation of a broad range of programs including What’s Next for teens in the areas of Good Character, Citizenship and Leadership Development, Academic Success and Career Development, Healthy Lifestyles to include life skills, mental health, the arts, sports and fitness, etc.
  • Works with Director of Teen Services to manage specialized teen programming including What’s Next, LIT, and YOY for the organization including events related to What’s Next, YOY, and LIT programming.
  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services, and activities.
  • Ensure engagement, promote and stimulate participation, and consistent attendance of youth enrolled in activities. Provide on-going feedback and recognition of teens’ progress and assist them at meeting designated benchmarks.
  • Establish rapport with youth and provide mentoring, guidance, role modeling to members and overall direction for their future planning, leadership development, artistic skills, physical activity, engagement, and academic progress.
  • Support members social and emotional development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts successfully.
  • Evaluation of programming activity and impact is regularly & consistently reviewed. Action steps are implemented, reviewed & updated regularly and program improvements are made as a regular process.
  • Plans, implements and participates in special activities (i.e. field trips, camps, etc.) and travel as required.
  • Establish and maintain Club program goals and settings that ensure the health and safety of members.
  • Consistently follows instructions and observes BGCH policies and procedures.
  • Track and monitor teens’ progress and report information appropriately.
  • Undertake any other duties that upper management staff might deem necessary to the best interest of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii.
  • Performs all other duties as necessary to ensure the success of programs under his/her jurisdiction.

Administrative Functions

  • Ensures information and other data maintained on programs, membership, etc. are accurate and timely.
  • Prepares and submits required written reports, program plans, data tracking, case notes, etc., on a timely basis, an in compliance with deadlines, to Director of Teen Services and/or Admin.
  • Research topics based on interest and needs of male and female teen members.
  • Assists organization with fund-raising activities including but not limited to Youth of the Year, Great Futures Day, Walk in the Country and Clubhouse specific events.
  • Attends and sometimes asked to lead scheduled staff meetings.
  • Assists with duties as assigned.

Supervision, Leadership Teen Development, Recruitment and Training

  • Monitors program delivery, works with program staff to plan and implement improvements. Communicates with Club staff, members and partner agencies to ensure understanding of programs opportunities, schedule and plans when outside entities participate in program delivery.
  • Monitors program areas and provides constructive feedback to staff with regard to program delivery and member guidance and discipline. Plans and implements opportunities to recognize program staff.
  • Participate and coordinate in-service training and staff development activities for program staff as requested by Director of Teen Services or Club staff.

Marketing, Community Relations and Collaborative Partnerships

  • Promotes, stimulates interest and increases visibility and participation of Club teen members in various Club activities and events.
  • Promote BGCH Scholarship program and work with eligible teens to apply for scholarships and explore post-secondary options.
  • Consistently connects and communicates with supervisors, staff teams, youth, parents and other stakeholders in a timely manner to ensure strong relationships and rapport are built and maintained for the betterment of the Clubs’ teens.
  • Collaborates with community partners to support teen initiatives. Represents both the Teen center and BGCH in their community ensuring that the interests of the youth are protected and supported.
  • Supports cross-functional initiatives across departments.

Facilities Management

  • Ensure that the teen program areas are safe, well ventilated and well lit and that Club equipment is maintained in good working condition.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Ability to carry out detailed and complex instructions; ability to BGCH with coworkers and public by telephone and in person as a member of a team to provide services to external and internal customers; ability to perform a variety of duties and prioritize tasks to meet organizational needs. Ability to clearly and concisely exchange ideas, information and guidance in person, by telephone, email, fax or correspondence. Physical requirements include: sight, hearing, sitting for four or more hours a day, standing for one to two or more hours a day, stooping; skills essential for successful communications include speaking, writing and reading comprehension.
