Position Overview

The Field Director leads District Operations and gives positive direction to the Golden Spread Council field staff to achieve team and council objectives. The Field Director directly supervises commissioned Professionals and may indirectly supervise part-time employees. To meet the goals established for the position and achieve success, the Field Director must work closely and cooperatively with volunteers and staff and lead them to implement the priorities and programs of the team.

Supervises and gives guidance to four full-time professionals in the council. Is held accountable for measurable achievements of the other professionals. Is responsible for the effective organization, operation, and promotion of the council program within the service area through full time District executives. Works with the District chairs and commissioner to fulfill their functions and facilitate the optimum collaboration between the districts and the board.

Responsibilities
  • STRATEGIC PLAN. In concert with the Director of Field Service and key volunteers, develop a strategic plan outlining long- and short-term vision, goals, and Provide specific and timely leadership to council volunteers and support staff to fully utilize council resources in achievement of council objectives, and measurement of performance.
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Under the guidance of the Scout Executive, directs the field staff by ensuring a competent staff, which demonstrates the skills of administering and effective plan of service, growth, and meaningful volunteer involvement. Gives personal leadership to each staff member to achieve the goals and other established objectives of the service area and council. Conducts regular reviews with staff members. Recommends the employment and dismissal of all personnel on the assigned team.
  • VOLUNTEERISM/GOVERNANCE. Leads team members to develop, recruit, train and motivate a volunteer corps to achieve Assists District Executives with governance matters, including the nominating committee process to seek out community and institutional contacts to develop stronger volunteer leadership in the service area.
  • MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT. Provides leadership to professional staff to increase membership density of all Maintains balanced growth in Lions, Tigers, Cubs, Webelos, Scouts BSA, Venturers, and Exploring. Shows an increase in total units over previous year. Achieves growth by meeting objectives in both units and youth. Lead outreach efforts to increase underserved and disadvantaged youth/families. Reduces the number of dropped units over previous year. Improve/maintain youth retention.
  • FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT. Provides leadership to service area staff to achieve Friends of Scouting (FOS)/annual campaign and Product Sales Trains staff to become successful campaign managers for family FOS, community FOS, product sales campaigns, and budget management. Assists staff to recruit, train, and motivate sufficient quality volunteers to make the campaigns successful. Assists districts to show increase in total net dollars over previous year in each area and increase total number of donors over previous year.
  • UNIT SERVICE. Assists service area staff to recruit, train, and motivate unit commissioners. Supervises staff in completing all unit recharters.
  • TEAM LEADERSHIP AND COVERAGE. Tracks workflow and work time of assigned Approves expense reports and vacation schedules of all district executives. Provides coverage when staff vacancies occur to assure continuity of service until a successor has been appointed.
Education

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, from an accredited institution preferred.

Qualifications
  • A sense of ownership of the council’s path and success; proven ability to communicate it, inspire donors, volunteers and staff with it; and commitment to grow it.
  • Fundraising skills with a successful record of Friends of Scouting (annual campaign) growth, special event development and grant writing.
  • Membership management skills with a proven track record of youth membership and adult volunteer growth (leading a membership campaign).
  • Strong interpersonal relationship-building skills with stakeholders at all levels of the community.
  • Proven staff and volunteer selection, recruitment and development skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with top corporate and community leaders.
  • Organizational skills and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Fiscal management/budget development.
  • Ability to communicate plans effectively to staff and provide leadership to plan development.

Work experience:

  • Three years or more experience as a BSA commissioned Professional.
  • Previous staff leadership experience preferred, but not required.
  • The position requires expert management of volunteer resources, organizational skills, budgeting abilities, and support of volunteers and staff in order to deliver the highest quality programs possible. Strong organizational and communications skills are essential.
