Boulder Scientific Company (BSC) is headquartered in Mead, CO, and is a premier provider of organometallic compounds and other specialty chemicals used in a wide range of applications. BSC is a pioneer and leading manufacturer of metallocene catalysts and co-catalysts that are primarily used to produce metallocene polyethylene, polypropylene and elastomers, but also supplies products into Electronics, Pharmaceutical and Defense applications. BSC operates two sites in Northern Colorado, which include: a main production facility in Mead and a second facility in Longmont. BSC has continuously grown the sales of its products to existing and new customers and expects to continue on a high growth trajectory.

The Director, Operations is accountable for managing all aspects related to chemical production and maintenance, optimization, productivity, process enhancements, and yield and cycle time improvements. This position must demonstrate strong leadership, organizational and time management skills, as well as have strong communication abilities. The scope of this role includes managing a team of managers and supervisors in support of maintenance and daily production. The Director is accountable for process and employee safety, the overall process for the training and development of our manufacturing, maintenance, and operations employees, and the execution of well-defined Master Batch Records. The Operations Leader will eliminate process upsets, resolve production issues and partner with the Director, Process Engineering to identify and implement process improvements, cost and throughput optimization, cost reductions, and identifying and acting upon opportunities to implement new equipment, processes, technology and process control upgrades.

The Director will be responsible for setting and achieving team goals, defining key metrics, establishing metrics tracking, and scaling operations to multiple Production units and sites within the BSC network. This role is accountable for coordinating Manufacturing and Maintenance activities for multiple locations and approximate headcount of 100. BSC is planning significant growth in production capacity and headcount over the next 18-36 months.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads a Culture of Safety: provides direction, motivation, and guidance in the implementation and support of Boulder’s BBS Program implementation; drives continuous compliance by having a passion for safety awareness in the organization, holding leaders and employees accountable, partnering with the Director, EHS&S to deliver best-in-class EHS culture; and be a steward of Safety and Environmental excellence
  • Supervises, coaches, evaluates, trains, and develops managers and supervisors that are responsible for the 24/7 Production operations and Maintenance activities, leads by example to drive engagement and accountability in order to develop highly effective teams
  • Plays a lead role in attracting, hiring, and retaining talent
  • Accountable for creating systems to track and assess Cost of Poor Quality, recommends and implements corrective actions, and partners with the Quality group to conduct root cause analyses
  • Leads Continuous Programs related to Overall Equipment Effectiveness to identify, investigate, and mitigate unnecessary downtime in Operations
  • Instructs, leads, and partners with the Manager, Maintenance & Facilities to implement a preventative and predictive maintenance program
  • Displays excellent leadership while driving change and implementing a safety and continuous improvement culture – partners with and influences the broader organization
  • Leads the production teams and helps set strategy, goals, and improvements at multiple locations
  • Partners with the Director, Integrating Planning and Control to execute finite production schedules by planning, directing, and assigning production activities
  • Defines, updates, monitors, and acts upon operational metrics to ensure the goals of production schedules, quality standards, costs, throughput, yields, and first pass acceptance are met and are improving
  • Develops and executes strategies around employee retention, employee schedule management, and employee morale
  • Guides the Production Managers and Manager, Maintenance & Facilities to define, implement, and revise operational policies and guidelines for the production and maintenance departments
  • Partners with the Director, Process Engineering to identify, define, scope, and execute continuous improvement projects in Production, Maintenance, and Facility Services
  • Develops the organizational competencies for continued growth within the Production and Maintenance teams
  • Manages the Production and Maintenance departments’ operating budget to ensure business goals are met with the greatest efficiency
  • Leads investigations and determines the root cause of any production delays, disruptions, or quality excursions and implements solutions

Qualifications

  • BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is preferred or similar technical background
  • Twelve plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience related to batch Chemical Processing (Organic Chemical Reactions, Separations of Solids and Liquids, Inert Filtrations, Phase Separations, Fractional Distillation, Crystallizations, Reaction Rate Determination, Calorimetry etc.)

Experience

  • At least five years’ experience managing employees including leaders of teams
  • Prefer experience working in a similar industry, such as fine chemicals, continuous process chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals or nuclear fields
  • Understanding of change management and manufacturing requirements to serve electronics and pharmaceutical customers a plus
  • Ability to drive between site locations
  • Excellent delivery, collaboration, and problem resolution skills
  • Must pass a job-related physical exam

Working Conditions

Extended keyboarding time required. This employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat. This position frequently requires the use of PPE including a respirator. This position performs a key role during emergency situations and must be able to respond quickly and competently in challenging situations. This position supports a 24/7 operation and must be available for urgent requests outside of normal working hours.
