Job Summary GeneralDescription The Surgical Technician (Surg Tech) functions as a part of the surgicalhealthcare team, providing technical support to surgeons, RN’s, and anesthetistin the operating room setting.
He / sheworks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. During the operation the SurgTech arrangessupplies and instruments, keeping an accurate count of the latter at all times;
passes instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon during theoperation; helps apply dressings, and helps prepare and preserve specimenstaken for testing.
In the SterileProcessing area, the Surg Tech will operate the sterilizers and run the varioustesting to validate and verify sterilization of surgical instruments andsupplies.
The Surg Tech will be responsible for cleaning and decontamination ofsurgical instruments following their use in surgery after regular hours, andchecking instruments before and after cases for proper working condition andsterility.
Responsibility Uses principles of aseptic practice in varyingsituations. Inspects sterile items forcontamination before opening.
Maintains sterility while opening sterile itemsfor procedure. Anticipates the need forsupplies and equipment. Checks suppliesfor outdates, restocks operating room and orders supplies to maintain anadequate on hand supply.
Accountability The Surgical Technician reports directly to theSurgical Services Department Manager. SpecialDemands Mental : Moderate to high stress.
Physical : Long periods of standing, walking, and heavy lifting. Exposureto blood and body fluids, unpleasant sights, smells and infectious diseasespossible.
Qualifications Experience CertifiedSurgical Technician (CST) with a minimum of 5 years of current experience as aSurgical Technician.
Must be registered as a Surg Tech with the State of Colorado.
