Job Summary/Basic Function:

To recruit new students to Boise State to support the university's enrollment goals. To represent Boise State on campus to students contemplating their college options and decisions through individual and group interaction. To produce high-quality recruitment messaging to target audiences.

The Admissions Counselor aspect of the position involves being a front-line service provider to the public and prospective students, which requires extensive knowledge of university people, programs, and policies, as well as a positive attitude and commitment to higher education. The candidate will serve students by responding to requests for information, providing individual admissions advising, and explaining policies. The candidate will conduct presentations about Boise State for groups of campus visitors.

This position involves traveling to key recruitment markets throughout the West. Providing timely and accurate customer service to prospective students, families, independent counselors, and high school career counselors is crucial in these territories. This position travels extensively throughout the fall and spring academic semesters.

This position is also responsible for the recruitment of Rural students, regardless of geographic location. The individual in this role will need to build strong partnerships with educational organizations like GEAR UP, TRIO, and others that align with our goal of supporting rural students and communities. Additionally, they will also be responsible for organizing events tailored to rural audiences.

Department Overview:

Boise State Undergraduate Admissions recruits and admits prospective undergraduate students in service to the university’s enrollment goals. The general functional areas of our department include customer service and campus visits, communications, recruitment, and systems/processing. Outreach and higher education advocacy are also important to our campus visit and other programming as we seek to serve future students in Idaho and beyond.

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Admissions Counselor must:

  • Counsel, advise, recruit, and maintain positive contact with potential students and their families regarding admission requirements, financial aid and scholarships, and campus life.
  • Travel throughout Idaho and out-of-state territories, including evenings and weekends, to represent Boise State at events, high schools, and college fairs
  • Establish and maintain relationships with high school contacts, community groups, parents, Boise State student organizations, and staff.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of various recruitment events both on and off campus, including events for prospective students and high school counselors.
  • Conduct both large and small group presentations, on and off campusoff-campus
  • Effectively utilize University data systems to provide high-quality customer service, execute campus visits, analyze data for effective decision-making, and complete reports related to recruitment, schedule, travel, and special programs.
  • Identify viable recruitment opportunities and make appropriate arrangements to attend and participate in Admissions programs for prospective students both on and off-campus.
  • Ensure timely follow-up with internal and external customers through written and verbal communication.
  • Model a strong customer service ethic and collaborate with other support offices

35% of Time the Admissions Counselor must:

  • Coordinate the recruitment of Rural students, regardless of geographic territory.
  • Collaborate with the communication team/ Sr Admissions Counselor to design and format PowerPoint presentations to support events.
  • Effectively use University data systems to provide high-quality customer service, execute campus visits, and analyze data to make effective decisions
  • Be an expert user of PeopleSoft (SIS), the university imaging system Perceptive Content, and our CRM (Technolutions Slate).

5% of Time the Admissions Counselor must:

  • Participate in Departmental, Divisional and University events, initiatives and programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of academic programs offered at Boise State
  • Ability to present to groups ranging in size from 5 to 500
  • Ability to work both independently and on a team
  • Expert user of PeopleSoft, Perceptive Content, and CRM (Slate).
  • Comfortability hosting events/meetings through virtual platforms
  • Ability to travel extensively and work evening and weekend hours
  • Ability to learn quickly and retain information
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Keen attention to detail, and the ability consistently follow up with students and families, high school counselors and campus partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High degree of time management skills
  • Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) guidelines, the "Statement of Principles of Good Practice" from the National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC), and "Professional Practices and Ethical Standards" set forth by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive in all conditions
  • Public speaking experience
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Experience in college or university admissions is strongly desired
  • Experience in event planning is strongly desired
