Blue Origin is Hiring a Sr. Systems Engineer - Risk Management Lead - Rocket Engines (R38830) Near Seattle, WA

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will lead implementation of risk and opportunity management in the rocket Engine Business Unit of Blue Origin, ensuring the safe and rapid development of innovative engines and propulsion systems for space applications. You'll work closely with a small team of systems engineering risk managers to set high standards for risk and opportunity management, and improve our processes, tools, and training. Through daily interaction with engineering and program management teams, you'll guide discussions, create mitigation plans, mentor colleagues, and ensure transparency in decision-making. Your role will help programs adapt their plans ahead of time to achieve better outcomes. As the Engines risk discipline leader, you will foster a culture of risk awareness and proactive risk management within the organization, encouraging open communication and knowledge sharing among team members.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on risk and opportunity management, providing guidance and support to colleagues and stakeholders as needed
  • Manage risks and opportunities at the program and business unit level
  • Analyze and report on trends and patterns in risk and opportunity management data to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement
  • Periodically review or audit program-level risks to ensure compliance with standards and best practices
  • Lead the development and implementation of risk-informed decision-making processes across the organization to drive strategic program planning
  • Develop filters and dashboards using JIRA & Confluence to inform priority and decision-making
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies for risk and opportunity management to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to ensure high-value and alignment in risk and opportunity management approaches
  • Conduct regular risk and opportunity management training sessions for engineering and program management teams to enhance their understanding and proficiency in these areas

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a relevant technical field
  • 10 years of system development/integration experience, preferably in aerospace or complicated technical systems, including some aspect of new product development
  • A track record of successful risk management leadership in complex, high-profile aerospace projects, demonstrating the ability to drive strategic risk decisions and achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Expertise in risk management standards, methodologies, and state-of-the-art tools
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, particularly in the context of spaceflight applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex situations, identify potential risks and opportunities, and develop effective mitigation plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead discussions, mentor team members, and engage with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and the ability to set and maintain high standards for risk and opportunity management.
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, while contributing to a team-oriented and collaborative culture.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Atlassian Products (JIRA & Confluence
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program or project management
  • Expertise with state-of-the art risk management tools and software
  • Experience with Tableau
  • Experience with specific risk management tools and software commonly used in the aerospace industry, such as @Risk, Primavera Risk Analysis, or similar applications.
  • Experience with database queries, such as SQL
  • Familiarity with industry-specific regulatory requirements and standards for space missions, such as NASA Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) guidelines or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for commercial spaceflight.
  • Knowledge of spaceflight industry regulations, safety standards, and best practices
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is
$146,644.50$205,302.30 USD
