Blue Origin is Hiring a Sr. Electrical Systems Engineer - Space Systems Development (R37408) Near Seattle, WA

We are a team with wide-ranging skillsets that value safety, problem-solving and diversity. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team, you will contribute to the design of the Electrical Power System (EPS) for future space vehicles. EPS scope includes power generation, storage, regulation, control, and distribution to vehicle subsystems and payloads. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight. You will create and maintain drawing and diagrams for power generation, distribution, system grounding and bonding.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct trades studies and supply knowledge to help down-select spacecraft electrical power system architectures appropriate for mission requirements.
  • Methodically estimate power consumption and current requirements (average, transient, in-rush etc.) from all vehicle subsystems and electrical components
  • Account for and justify contingency/margin of EPS components from concept to production
  • Generate EPS and power consuming component models based on a combination of first principals, empirical information, and test data.
  • Maintain EPS budgets and power equipment lists that track power generation, consumption and storage during all relevant portions of a mission.
  • Analyze and determine compliant grounding/bonding strategies and architectures
  • Design and analyze electrical systems for EMI/EMC compliance
  • Create and maintain system diagrams for power generation, distribution, system grounding, and bonding.
  • Create models and simulation of the EPS to evaluate use cases and conditions.
  • Perform analyses such as voltage drop/line loss, component derating/stress analysis, thermal effects and worst-case analysis.
  • Trade combinations of various power generation and storage solutions such as solar arrays, fuel cells, and battery modules (especially Li-Ion chemistries).
  • Trade design requirements such as reliability, cost, modularity, and efficiency for power management and distribution (PMAD) components
  • Estimate the size, mass, and location on vehicle of EPS components.
  • Define and resolve challenges for key interfaces of EPS components (power quality, thermal, mechanical loads) with key stakeholders.
  • Effectively communicate development status, risks, and challenges to management.
  • Work closely with systems and design engineers to develop integrated design solutions – rapidly assess conceptual designs and iterate.
  • Write cogent and succinct technical memos and devise innovative, intuitive, and delightful ways to visualize quantitative information.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics or related disciplines
  • At least 5 to 7 years of experience in design, development, test and operation of vehicle Avionics systems
  • A breadth of understanding in electrical engineering such as developing complex circuit cards, consumer electronics, wireless devices, or other advanced electronic commercial or aerospace products
  • Experience with analog, digital and mixed-signal circuit analysis, simulation, design, test, troubleshooting, signal integrity, power, and grounding and general board layout principles
  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the electronic assembly product lifecycle
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of collaboration
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Master of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics or related disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience designing high reliability safety-critical, Class 2/3 board assemblies; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254 and similar standards
  • Demonstrated experience designing and/or certifying aerospace electronics for demanding environments (DO-160, SMC-S-016, or similar standards)
  • Test experience with high reliability systems in a hardware-rich environment, demonstrating the ability to tailor the approach for variable levels of required fidelity (prototype, flight, formal qualification)
  • Experience with launch vehicle or spacecraft Avionics systems hardware development, integration, and test
  • Demonstrated experience with detailed design of one or more major components of spacecraft power systems (solar arrays, fuel cells, power converters, or similar)
  • Scripting, Programming and Analysis: TCL, Python, Linux shell and Windows batch scripting; C / C ; MATLAB / Simulink, SPICE and HFSS (or similar modeling/analysis tools)

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
