Blue Origin is Hiring a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - New Glenn (R38519) Near Seattle, WA

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, specialists, and technicians, you will design various mechanical systems for New Glenn’s 1st stage reusable booster, including flight control actuators, landing gear, separation mechanisms, or hydraulic power systems. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of the product lifecycle. You will develop conceptual designs, conduct trade studies, and participate in our design review process. You will bring your designs to release maturity through detailed design, analysis, and drawing creation. You will be responsible for maintaining the schedule, plan, and budget for your hardware. You will collaborate with cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams to procure, fabricate, test, and ultimately fly the hardware you have designed.

We are looking for someone at any experience level (senior engineer, mid career engineer, or early career engineer) to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • 7 years of experience managing aerospace or equivalent type mechanical systems elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles
  • Strong mechanical design and integration skills using 3D modeling tools
  • Highly organized and proven leader with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • 10 years of recent experience managing aerospace or equivalent type mechanical systems elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles.
  • Experience as a mentor or project manager.
  • Experience across the full product development lifecycle: concept definition, architecture, requirements capture and development, implementation, verification, system integration, qualification and release.
  • Experience in primary flight control actuator design.
  • Experience in aerospace hydraulic system component design or system architecture design.
  • Experience in aerospace deployable devices design such as doors, landing gear or sensors.
  • Experience in spacecraft separation systems design.
  • Experience in Creo (Pro-E) and Windchill PLM.
  • Experience performing fluid analysis using SINDA/FLUINT or similar tools.
  • Experience in structural FEA using ANSYS, NASTRAN or similar tools.

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
