Blue Origin is Hiring a Manufacturing Engineer III - Assembly (Structures) (R36834) Near Huntsville, AL

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Facilities, and Security. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a small, passionate team of experts, you will be responsible for the manufacturing definition, development, evaluation, improvement, and scaling of the assembly integration and test processes for a structures module on a spacecraft. You will work closely with production operators, quality inspectors, test engineers, process engineers, and designers. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills and commitment to quality to positively impact millions of people living and working in space. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Review designs for manufacturability (DFM), process efficiency, and operator safety
  • Transform design definition into step-by-step instructions for manufacturing
  • Integrate safety, specifications, standards, and best practices into manufacturing definition
  • Define, develop, implement and optimize Assembly, Integration and Test processes for the structural module of a spacecraft
  • Identify, define, and procure tooling and fixtures to meet manufacturing definition
  • Evaluate and improve process flow, design requirements, and manufacturing methods
  • Lead and support gated reviews for new product development
  • Generate and optimize mBOM’s, manufacturing plans, and work orders
  • Provide shipside support to operations during a build and be the technical point of contact during execution
  • Conduct PFMEA studies, mitigate risks and document work instructions
  • Disposition non-conformances, drive root cause analysis and deploy corrective actions
  • Summarize, document, and communicate testing results to stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • 5 years of relevant engineering experience working as an assembly integration and test engineer (preferably on launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite)
  • Experience working with design engineers on part manufacturability
  • Understanding of GD&T and ability to review drawings
  • Creation of complex build and flows, manufacturing plans, or the like with numerous piece parts and several sub-assemblies
  • Experience taking a product from development to production
  • Experience with a variety of hardware manufacturing practices including: assembly, integration, instrumentation, precision cleaning, non-destructive testing, leak testing, final acceptance testing, fabrication, and machining
  • Experience prioritizing hardware procurement and fabrication and communicating these priorities to the team
  • Creating bill of materials (mBOM’s)
  • Authoring work instructions
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong digital literacy (MS Office, MS Project, MS Visio, and Agile Management tools such as Jira, Confluence or AirTable)
  • Experience with 3D modeling software
  • Experience with crane lifts of high value hardware
  • Ability to develop processes compliant to industry quality systems such as AS9100
  • Experience with crane lifts of high value hardware
  • BS of Engineering or Engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Hands on experience with building flight hardware (preferably on launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite )
  • Experience with launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development, production, or operations
