Blue Origin is Hiring an Avionics High Voltage Power Distribution Engineer Near Huntsville, AL

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on development, manufacturing, and operation of satellite systems to address one of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space mobility.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will contribute to the design of the Electrical Power System (EPS) for future space vehicles. EPS scope includes power generation, storage, regulation, control, and distribution to vehicle subsystems and payloads. These positions will directly impact our history of space exploration, and your dedication and attention to detail will cultivate the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight. You will build and maintain drawings and diagrams for power distribution, system grounding, and bonding.

In addition, the ideal candidate will perform optimally within a team, collaborating with hardware and software engineers to integrate firmware with other system components. This person must communicate technical information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct trade studies and supply knowledge to help down-select spacecraft electrical power system architectures appropriate for mission requirements.
  • Methodically estimate power consumption and current requirements (average, transient, in-rush, etc.) from all vehicle subsystems and electrical components
  • Account for and rationalize contingency/margin of EPS components from concept to production
  • Generate EPS and power-consuming component models based on first principles, empirical information, and test data.
  • Maintain EPS budgets and power equipment lists that track power generation, consumption, and storage during all mission-related portions.
  • Analyze and determine compliant grounding/bonding strategies and architectures
  • Craft and analyze electrical systems for EMI/EMC compliance
  • Build models and simulations of the EPS to evaluate use cases and conditions.
  • Perform analyses such as voltage drop/line loss, component derating/stress analysis, thermal effects, and worst-case analysis.
  • Trade combinations of various power generation and storage solutions such as solar arrays, fuel cells, and battery modules (especially Li-Ion chemistries).
  • Trade design requirements such as reliability, cost, modularity, and efficiency for power management and distribution (PMAD) components
  • Estimate the size, mass, and location of the vehicle of EPS components.
  • Reliably communicate development status, risks, and challenges to management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Aerospace, or related fields
  • 5 years of experience with defining architectures and maturing system definitions for Electrical Power Systems, including requirements, sizing, modeling, EMI/EMC compliance
  • A breadth of understanding in electrical engineering, such as developing circuit cards, consumer electronics, wireless devices, or other sophisticated electronic commercial or aerospace products
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and champion collaboration
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful candidates typically have experience in the design, development, test, and operation of vehicle Avionics and Power systems
  • Direct experience with the development and integration of solar arrays that follow AIAA standards
  • Familiarity developing integration of batteries and energy storage systems which follow JSC-20793 or TOR-8583
  • Familiarity with hardware assurance DO-254 and similar standards
  • Experience with launch vehicle Avionics systems hardware development, integration, and test
  • Scripting, Programming, and Analysis: Python, MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape, VBA

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
