    Position Title: Elementary Literacy Tutor (Full Time and Part Time)
    Math and Reading Tutors at Valley View Elementary

    Job Overview
    Positions begin August 2024 and run through June 2025
    Positions available throughout the state
    Full Time (35 hours/week), and Part Time (25 hours/week) positions require availability Monday-Friday during regular school hours.
    Reduced Part Time (18 hours/week) positions require availability at least 3 days a week during regular school hours.
    Overview
    Did you know that students who don’t read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school? Our goal is to help all Minnesota children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures. If you are passionate about education and literacy, join us and make a difference in the lives of preschool and elementary students. Become a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and help struggling readers, age 3 to grade 3, get on track for reading at grade level. We’ll provide training to get you started and ongoing coaching so you’ll be supported throughout your serve year.
    Responsibilities
    • Work one-on- one with students in kindergarten through third grade who need extra support learning to read. Tutors work with the same students in 20-minute sessions every day during school hours, using a variety of scripted Minnesota Reading Corps strategies, called interventions.
    • With younger students, tutors help build early literacy skills, such as letter sounds and names, and word blending. For older students, tutors select reading passages and follow intervention scripts to practice fluency skills.
    • Conduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system. Tutors will use this data to monitor student progress, plan, and set goals.
    • Maintain confidentiality of all student data
    • Provide opportunities for families to get involved in their child’s education by sharing Reading Corps literacy activities to do at home
    • Tutors will receive the consistent support of an onsite coach. Some travel may benecessary to attend training.
    • Participate in site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights
    Qualifications
    • Strong interest in education, specifically in helping elementary students develop their literacy skills
    • Dedication to community service and abilityto commit to a full term of service
    • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email
    • Attention to detail
    • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional
    • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff
    • Excellent time management and decision-making skills
    • Ability to work with diverse personalities and adapt to the school environment
    • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity
    Eligibility Requirements
    • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently
    • Age 18 or older by the program start date
    • Possess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start date
    • Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
    Please note: Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
    Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service. Tutors are paid a modest living allowance every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild. Tutors may be eligible for health insurance, child care assistance, and student loan forbearance during their service.

    Pay:
    Compensation for the 24-25 academic year:
    Federal Benefits include:
    • Up to $5176.50 in Education Award

    • Time accrual toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
    Program Specific Benefits by hours commitment per week
    35 Hours
    • $1000 stipend paid every two weeks.
    • Individual health insurance — monthly premium 100% covered.
    • Child care assistance — based on family size and income.
    25 Hours
    • $750 stipend paid every two weeks.
    18 Hours
    • $535 stipend paid every two weeks.
    10 Hours
    • $350 stipend paid every two weeks.
    **Full time tutors are also eligible for Individual Health Insurance - Monthly Premium 100% covered and Child Care Assistance - Based on Family Size and Income
    • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55 may gift their award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.
