Bloodworks NW is Hiring a Research Technologist II Near Seattle, WA

We have a wonderful opportunity at our BloodworksNW Research Institute to apply for the Research Technologist II position. Bloodworks has a diverse research program that includes basic, clinical, and translational research that focuses on hemostasis and thrombosis, bleeding, rare blood disorders, and blood transfusion. The successful candidate will work under general supervision, perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting specialized laboratory tests, and experiments associated with various assigned research projects studying the molecular mechanisms of thrombosis and hemostasis, perform specialized tasks associated with the breeding, care, treatment and testing of laboratory animals in a research facility, expected to contribute in developing specific project requirements from concepts and responsible for all aspects of lab projects. REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 2 years of research experience (preferably in coagulation and blood clotting and platelet biology involving diverse approaches including, In vitro and ex vivo platelet function assays, small animal microsurgery, ex vivo, and in vivo microscopic imaging and basic biochemistry assays) or equivalent education and experience. Experience in animal handling, rodent breeding colony management, and associated procedures Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail. Basic computer skills, including word processing, database and spreadsheet management, email, and Internet. Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. The applicant should be familiar with mouse models and have experience with microvascular surgery techniques related to mouse models of thrombosis. The ideal candidate has experience with scientific writing, poster design, and manuscript preparation in addition to laboratory techniques. Specific job skills include, but are not limited to: The ability to push, pull, and lift an average of 20-50 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 10-20 pounds throughout the day. Job skills related to specific job functions include frequent use of a handheld pipette, sampling handling with proper aseptic technique while working in a laminar flow hood, flow cytometry, and animal handling. The technician will be responsible for independently troubleshooting and correcting erroneous results or problems with laboratory equipment, including maintenance and repair. The project will utilize the following equipment located in the lab: 1) upright and inverted intravital, confocal, and fluorescent microscopy, 2) aggregometry, 3) flow cytometry, 4) western blot electrophoresis, 5) PCR 6) Hemavet, and 6) thromboelastography 7) ultrasound. Research technician responsibilities include designing, executing, and recording laboratory experiments, applying standard scientific protocols to experiments, and research, as well as improving current methods, and evaluating innovative techniques. Required mental activities include continuous use of the ability to read, speak, write, and understand English; Required mental activities used less frequently include decision-making, interpersonal skills, teamwork, creativity, use of discretion, problem analysis, independent judgment and/or independent action, and the ability to perform basic Math (used frequently); mentoring, presentations/teaching, training/supervising, and the ability to perform basic programming (used occasionally); customer service and the ability to perform advanced Math (used rarely). Working Conditions include, but are not limited to:This position has direct exposure to blood-borne pathogens and requires work with human and animal blood and tissue samples. Telecommuting is not offered in this role. Bloodworks is a community-supported non-profit organization.
