BirdWatch is Hiring a Remote Product Manager (Philly / DC / remote)

BirdWatch is a recently-founded concierge home maintenance company that brings together a founding team with decades of experience in related services. We are your one-stop shop for everything you need in your home: repairs, improvements, preventative maintenance, renovation advising, and more. We are on a mission (we're a public benefit C corp) to save time, energy and money for our customers while creating respected, well-paying jobs and having a positive impact on every community and vendor partner that we serve. It's a circular economy that doesn't create profit at the expense of a particular stakeholder group. Everything you want to know about our service and our view of the world, you can check out here:www.birdwatch.com

We are now bringing on a Product Manager to bolster our tech build-out. You’ll be reporting to our Chief Product Officer – both our CPO and CEO have experience in product innovation and design thinking, so you can rest assured customer-centric practices are core to everything we do.

We have customer growth (in both B2C and B2B channels). We have meaningful revenue (hundreds of properties already as members) and growing market demand. We're raising our seed round as we speak. We have a strong sense of what our product will be, with key partners already in the fold. The further vision is to open our platform in the years ahead to other providers. The founding team has deep experience in creating fundamentally useful products and services that make people's lives better.

You will help shape the vision of our platform and roll up your sleeves to help us bring to market a suite of products and services to enable the homeowner, technician, vendor and home manager experiences. We need your thought partnership, your insight, and your execution.

We are open to remote candidates, as want the best possible candidate to join the team. That said, there will be bonus points for being within maybe 50-100 miles of Philadelphia or DC (where our team members are), so that we can spend at least a few days a month in person. If you already live in one of those places, sweet, we can dig in deeper, but this isn't a 9-to-5 in-office face-time kinda gig.

So, what does the role entail?

Performance Objectives

  • Enable the creation of the product roadmap and product planning process that defines and releases v1 of the BirdWatch OS by EOY 2022
    • Work cross-functionally with leadership, engineering, and all other relevant teams to document vision, organize existing customer insights, and generate requirements that will inform roadmap choices and priorities
    • Create materials to support deployment
    • Set up and manage product-related tools
  • Build and own feature development, specifications, and release success
    • Design and prioritize product features based on organizational goals
    • Conduct ongoing reviews with cross-functional team for alignment
    • Lead customer / end-user discovery
    • Write functional specifications and customer facing product documentation such as sales and training materials and implementation documentation
  • Create a voice of the customer protocol in the first 90 days
    • Develop prospect / customer personas
    • Recommend appropriate (lean where possible, robust where needed) processes to ensure customer needs are considered and measured throughout the organization’s work
    • Act as a SME who can brainstorm with customers and operations teams to identify, prioritize, and develop insights and high level designs for new features and/or use cases
  • Manage external platform implementations
    • Support on-going refinement of platforms such as Zendesk, Hubspot, Invoiced.com, Stripe and others where engineering is not required for refinement
    • Coordinate support requirements as needed for internal and external technical work on such platforms
  • Refine and maintain competitive analysis for both product and marketing purposes
    • Partner with leadership to further map out the relevant landscape
    • Gather additional competitive intelligence (business, operations and product) on competitors and alternatives
    • Gather and analyze user feedback on these other players in the marketplace

Potential traits of a great candidate

  • You have a track record of building human-centered, engaging customer experiences and products, preferably with experience in services industries
  • You have thrived in multiple product roles, including both early-stage tech start-ups and more mature environments, and you dislike micromanagement (because we don’t do it, we don’t have time for it, and we don’t want to you do it either)
  • You have proven experience building strong yet concise business cases, with exceptional verbal and written storytelling skills
  • You have the ability to conduct truly useful market analyses and user research
  • Your past peers and subordinates love you and are inspired by your work and work ethic
  • You demand the best of everyone around you (both below & above on the org chart)
  • You have a clear sense of accountability with the ambiguity of a startup environment, and you proactively bring structure where there is little or none
  • You have repeatedly demonstrated personal success in creating software architecture and building digital products from early-stage release through to scaled deployment
  • You’ve managed, mentored, and inspired a small team of engineers providing architectural guidance, code reviews, etc.

If this is describing you and the next challenge you want in your career, we'd love to talk and see what the future could hold.
