Construction Materials Testing (CMT) TxDOT Technician

Role Overview

With strong back-blog of construction engineering & testing, CEI materials engineering and QC testing services on TxDOT projects in West Texas, Beyond Engineering and Testing (BEYOND) is currently seeking a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) – TxDOT Technician for our West Texas Group in Beyond Midland office.

This position requires a candidate with effective time-management, communication, planning, organization and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate has the ability to take initiative, work independently and coordinate efforts with multi-discipline teams. The candidate must possess excellent attention to details and have the ability to produce high quality work under short time constraints. The successful candidate will be part of the core management team and will have significant opportunity for growth.

Key Technical Responsibilities

Operation Supervision

  • Coordinate and manage the field and laboratory testing operations of construction materials ensuring that field and laboratory testing services are performed in a safe manner and consistent with company quality protocols, project requirements and in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement project specific sampling and testing plans based on contract document requirements including, but not limited to, project schedules, project plans, general notes, TxDOT specifications, and TxDOT Guide Schedule for sampling and testing.
  • Attend pre-con and proactivity meeting leading the discussion of CEI sampling and testing plans.
  • Plan and schedule daily CMT operations and dispatch technicians to projects.
  • Supervises the administrative systems of the laboratory and field testing operations to ensure that reports, proposals, invoices, and information required to serve the client are properly prepared and reported.
  • Ensure that laboratory and field technicians follow company administrative policies including, but not limited to, time sheets, expense reports and purchase order requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory and field technicians and perform troubleshooting to resolve quality issues in the field.
  • Review testing records performed by assigned construction engineering technicians to assure compliance with requirements of established procedures.

· Report and communicate of construction non-conformance to Clients and assist in resolutions.

If needed, perform laboratory and field testing of soil, base, aggregate, Portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete and masonry in accordance with established procedures and the standard methods established by AASHTO, ASTM, TxDOT or other agency with appropriate, properly calibrated testing equipment.

Prepare and submit accurate, legible, comprehensive and complete testing reports on a daily basis in accordance with established quality procedures.

Laboratory Quality Management & Training

· Oversee calibration and maintenance of field and laboratory testing equipment, tools and gauges, and maintain and update equipment inventory and calibration records.

· Supervise the efficient utilization of facilities and equipment assigned to his or her area and makes requests for additional equipment and facilities as needed to meet the client’s demands.

· Plan, coordinate, plan and conduct the training of construction inspectors, and laboratory & field technicians.

· Mentor and train construction engineering inspectors and technicians on inspection, sampling and testing procedures.

· Evaluate the performance of inspectors and technicians and assists them in their professional development and growth, consistent with company policies and procedures.

Business Development/Administration

· Assist Management during preparation of proposals and cost estimates for CMT services to ensure a proper scoping of services, availability of manpower, and appropriate pricing to render a profit.

· Provide supplemental operating policies and procedures unique to the laboratory to ensure that the testing services are accomplished consistent with Beyond’s quality protocol and in an orderly and efficient manner.

Basic/Required Qualifications

- High School Diploma or equivalent required.

- Minimum 5 to15 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience.

- Have and maintain five (5) or more following certifications:

  • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician (Required)
  • ACI Aggregate Testing Technician (Preferred)
  • TxAPA SB101, SB103, SB201 and/or SB202 in soil/base (Preferred)
  • TxAPA AGG101 in aggregates (Preferred)
  • TxAPA Level 1A and/or B in hot mix asphalt (Required)

- Certified in Radiation Safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.

- Valid Driver’s License required.

- Reliability – must be able to arrive at designated project sites prior to scheduled times.

- Ability to prepare reports and documentation.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

- Flexibility to work outside normal business hours as required

- Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy.

- It is preferred that the successful candidate has extensive experience in and in-depth knowledge with

  • TxDOT specifications
  • TxDOT test procedures
  • General notes of TxDOT Odessa, Lubbock, El Paso and/or Amarillo Districts
  • TxDOT QAP for design-bid-build projects
  • TxDOT Guide Schedule for Sampling and Testing

- SiteManager reporting

Physical Demands

  • Physical examination required to obtain medical clearance to work.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs and move 100 lbs
  • Clean driving record and capable of being insured for driving company vehicles.
  • Able to work in variable outside conditions, including extreme heat or cold.
